Yeah, I just finished reading the Mad Cave's Gatchaman comic on Hoopla. Thanks for this announcement ANN. Can't wait to read this spin-off when they made this available on Hoopla.

These comics have to be doing well if they keep doing little minis. Wonder if they plan to export them to Japan?

I'm glad you brought that up because I've been trying to solve the mystery of why do American comic book/graphic novels based on Japanese properties don't get simulpub releases in Japan when manga can get simulpub release in the US at the same time it comes out in Japan. That's the thing that keep baffling me time and time again.

I mean if we can get manga to get simulpub release in US/North America the same time it comes out in Japan. Then it should have been possible for this comics and other comic/graphic novels based on Japanese properties to get simulpub release in Japan. I would love to see IDW's Godzilla and Sonic the Hedgehog comic along with Mad Cave's comic adaptation of Tatsunoko properties to get a simulpub release in Japan in the same manner we get manga in the US as it comes out in Japan at the same time. That's what really frustrate me, and I believe in win-win principle and equal opportunity.

If I had to fashion a guess some of this stuff may not be seen as all that worth simul publishing. By everything I’ve heard while Sonic isn’t hated in Japan it’s not as popular in Japan as it is in the U.S. and while I presume the more recent American Related Godzilla stuff has an audience in Japan is it as well regarded there as the Japanese Godzilla stuff?

OK, here's the problems with what you stated:

  • Do you know about Archaia Publishing's comic adaptation of Cyborg 009 back in 2013? It was able to get a simulpub publishing in Japan and US at the same time and this was back in 2013, and this was way before manga getting simulpub release in the US became the new norm today. So if this comic book of a Japanese IP/property was able to get a simulpub in Japan even back in 2013, then it should've been possible for other American comic book/graphic novels adaptation of Japanese properties to get a simulpub in Japan in the same manner when manga are able to get simulpub in the US at the same time it comes out in Japan.

  • IDW's Godzilla comic book/graphic novels getting a simulpub in Japan should've been a big no-brainer for any Godzilla fans including the Japanese fanbase given that Phase Six, a Japanese publishing company that is responsible for licensing, translating, and publishing all of IDW's Godzilla comics in Japan. And that company is not showing sign of slowing down or facing any significant decline in the sales in Japan. It's still publishing IDW's Godzilla series in Japan even to this day. This should've warranted a simulpub release in Japan if the IDW's Godzilla series is that well-loved in Japan.

  • About IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog, the comic book particularly vol.1 sold out like crazy in Japan back in 2020 & I've never seen anything like this despite Sonic is not a well-known or a beloved character in Japan on the same rank as Mario, or any Shonen Jump characters. I've never seen or heard of an American comic book selling out like that in Japan other then IDW's Sonic, and the fact that 2 of IDW-exclusive characters from the comic were featured in a Japanese fire safety promo is something else that I've never seen before in any Japanese properties. If the Sonic the Hedgehog American comic series is selling well in Japan to the point where 2 characters from that same American comic series are being featured in a Japanese fire safety promo. Then that should've warranted IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog series to get a simulpub release in Japan given the way the series is doing well in Japan.

So there's my argument for making American comic book series based on Japanese properties to get a simulpub release in Japan, and the evidence I given above kind of backed that up. I was disappointed that the Marvel's Ultraman series wasn't given a simulpub release given the mainstream popularity of Ultraman in Japan (although the comic did get a Japanese-translated release, but I'm still not happy the comic wasn't given a simulpub release in Japan).
