Brian, just wanted to drop in and give you a kudos for the advice you gave to the reader interested in starting their own podcast. Not only does it apply to podcasts, but it can apply to other things as well, such as websites. Good job. Smile

On the note of the long running JUMP series there's lots of speculation on when this stuff is gonna end but here's how I see it:

Naruto will most likely be done by next year, maybe a bit longer but defiently by the end of 2012 since it;s on it;s last arc, and Kishimoto has shown interest in making another manga series(a sports manga if I recall)

One Piece, as Oda stated, probably will go on for another decade. I don;t know if it;ll go on longer than that but it;s definently passed the halfway point, and still seems to be going in a somewhat steady direction.

Bleach...I have no clue. Bleach is so directionless at this point that I don;t even know if Kubo cares about what he;s writing anymore. I do recall hearing something about him saying it'll take at least another decade for it to end, but I have my doubts that it;ll keep it;s popularity going if he doesn;t make it clearer where the series is going. I mean even some of the diehard fans are angry with Kubo these days.

Can we please stop calling Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece the "Big three". In neither Japan or America are they the three most popular manga, in Japan Bleach sales have dropped over 200,000 books over the past few years, while in America One Piece has never gotten huge sales.

Yeah, I have to agree with this. I had thought about doing some sort of blog for a few months, and then when December of last year started I simply decided to start it up, and now it's been about 6 months and I'm still running it with no real reason to stop doing so, even if it doesn't necessarily "burn up the charts", so to speak. In the end it really comes down to doing what you want to do and liking what you talk and/or write about. As long as you truly show that you are having a good time doing it then people will read and/or watch it.

As for the reason why it looks like shounen manga tends to run much longer than it used to, there's all kinds of reasons. Like Brian said, the people running these companies are more than likely different from the people that ran these companies back in the 70s and 80s, and money/profits definitely play a big role. From what I can tell with Shounen Jump mangas in the 70s most series wouldn't go too far beyond 20 volumes at the most. Titles like Kochikame, Ring ni Kakero, and Kinnikuman looked to be the first titles to really keep going beyond that (and even then RinKake ended at 25 volumes), and in the 80s it looked like 30 volumes was a high point. But the 80s also seemed to be the time when companies like Shueisha saw that they could have their creators stretch out their titles and continue them as long as people were reading each new chapter and buying each new tankouban release. And that continued into the 90s, but I think it really only happens to those titles that end up becoming phenomenons and not exactly a "trend" across everything, though it is kind of obvious that the average length of a popular shounen manga is longer than what the average was back in the past.

My thought exactly, because the first thing came out to mind when I read that part is not podcast, but a blog Smile
And if I may add (based on my experience of blogging anime stuffs for years) is that you can't please everyone. So don't try to do it. Once you're getting closer to find your own style/charm, people who didn't like it will leave. But people who love it would still come back. And bring their friends with them.

Kubo has gone on record as saying this current 'mini' arc is the next to last, then the series is over.

With the spoiler[huge World Ninja War III in Naruto beginning its concluding part] in a few months, spoiler[depending on what the Raikage and Tsunade do], I don't see why Kishimoto would end it after that. Naruto still has to deal with Sasuke and become Hokage.

And One Piece can run another 20 years and that'd be fine by me. I don't think Oda will take to a break or retirement well. Hell, he only took a week off during the four week break back in September! The man was specifically designed by Japan's top scientists to be a mangaka.

All of what you have mentioned in Naruto can be covered within the scope of this arc. Given that most of the series was building up to spoiler[the third Great Ninja War] I don;t see any reason for him to do anything afterwords.

I mean we can always get a flashforward X amount of years to see Naruto become Hokage after all.

Just as an example, you will never ever find a legit animation cel from the original Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series. Never in a million years. Or until Hideaki Anno collapses into a cloud of dust and debris, dropping a special key, Legend of Zelda-style, that unlocks his mystical treasure vault of production artwork.

Not quite. While Gainax did hold on to most of the artwork, some of it has made it onto the markets. (Mike Toole in your link says that some were outright stolen!)

For example, a very nice Misato went up recently for >$4k: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/auc_e/itemInfo.do?itemId=03002950650100003

Just to add to the starting up a podcast thing, a great way to get exposure is to put your feed up on Anime Nano. Especially for a new podcast or blog, that is where you will end up getting a lot of your hits from. Plus it's from people who are actually looking to listen/read about people talking about anime, not someone who accidentally ended up on your site from a google image hit and instantly leaves it again

Naruto and Kishimoto are definitely not aiming to run forever, this major arc is clearly the last, and Kishi has talked about his plans for his next manga (a seinen title focusing on mafia IIRC) several times. Wish people would stop assuming, "oh, it's a mainstream shonen so there's still no end in sight" when there clearly is.

Bleach is reportedly getting close to being done. Not sure why Kubo didn't end it with the conclusion of the spoiler[Aizen storyline] as this newest arc just feels tacked-on, but honestly the quality of the series the last few years makes me question how much he even cares anymore.

One Piece passed the halfway point about a year before Oda spoiler[did the timeskip]. So we can expect another 9-10 years from here, and really have nothing to suggest otherwise until we get closer to that point.

I'm fine with where Naruto and One Piece have gone so far, so I'm certainly not upset with the series' length.

You know what's an awesome Eva rip-off? Dual!

I know it's not all that popular, and the quality is debatable, but as someone who really cannot stand most harem anime it's shocking that it's still one of my most re-watched shows. (I've seen it at least 10 times)

I've always wanted to try podcasting, but I have lousy recording equipment and no one I'd actually want to co-host with. Also don't know of anyone I know that would listen. Also, I don't think I could pack in enough content to go on longer than 5 minutes... ALSO, it'd take an insane amount of editing to remove all of the "um"s, "uh"s, and "like"s.

As a cel collector it's always great to see original production art getting some attention. I do disagree with Mr. Hanson on a few things though.

Quote:
So I guess just to summarize what Mike Toole said in his column a few months back, it's actually quite the opportune moment to grab some really cool animation cels on the cheap.

This is quite true, but not because of the reason you suggest:

Quote:
The market sort of burst some years back when dangerously obsessive collectors (see the creepy, almost Borat-ish live-action segment on "The Cel Collector" on Otaku no Video) literally flooded the market with cels that nobody really wanted. They were either from shows or movies that were never all that popular with hardcore Otaku in Japan (Japanese Otaku all love Sailor Moon obviously, but Trigun? Not so much), or were random, out-of-sequence bits of animation of side characters with their eyes closed and their hands in front of their faces.

Those sort of cels (often refered to as "Junk Cels") have been around plentifully since forever. While they might tempt non-collectors looking to get something from their favorite series regardless of the quality of the image, serious collectors know to ignore them and wait for the really good items to show up for sale.

The main cause for the shrinking number of cel collectors is that anime is no longer made using cels.

Since about 2003, virtually no anime series are made by using cel animation. This means that the hobby is simply not attracting many younger collectors and veteran collectors are not finding any cels available to collect from newer shows, which often makes them lose interest. Certainly, there are original production sketches available for many recent series, but sketch collecting has always lived in the shadow of cel collecting. Cels show you the exact picture as it appears onscreen, whereas sketches can only show the pencil lines. There's naturally still cels available from older anime series, but these are never going to reel in many younger fans. At the same time, most of the older collectors will find themselves with other priorities like work and family life.

Quote:
The rub, though, is that... you kinda have to go to Japan to get a lot of this good stuff on the cheap. A Japanese hobby store will probably toss a pretty cool Trigun cel in a bin for only twenty bucks, but eBay sellers and importers know better - they know that Trigun still has a bit of a following in the West, and aren't afraid to tack an extra hundred dollars onto it. People will pay for it, after all.

Sure, Japanese anime merch stores may have some cheap cels for sale, but these are typically not going to be particularly good cels. To be frank, i do not see why anyone who's serious about collecting would want to focus on getting super-cheap cels. Shouldn't the goal be to acquire truly good pieces that you can be proud to own? A particularly striking cel from a favourite character or a memorable scene for example? The really good pieces are rarely going to be cheap, but quality beats quantity anytime in my opinion (one obviously should stick to a realistic budget and not go overboard though).

The best place to get anime production art is Yahoo Japan auctions BTW. You'll need to use a deputy service to bid on YJ, but the selection can't be beat and if you look around carefully there are some splendid bargains to be had. Mandarake is also a good place to browse and does not require the use of a deputy, but good items tend to be more heavily contested there .

Evangelion cels aren't even remotely difficult to find. Yahoo Japan has at least a dozen or so available at any given time, and you'll see them show up on Mandarake from time to time as well. It is definitely one of the more expensive anime series to collect production art from though, especially if you want a good cel of Rei or Asuka. Cels of Shinji or Misato can be found for relatively reasonable money.

And maybe this is just the perspective of someone who is WAITING for the next volumes of One Piece to come out to eagerly buy and read, or the next Bleach to get from a friend paw through in moments of boredom, (or the next Naruto to continue to ignore completely), that makes them feel longer.

Yeah yeah! This is like my reaction to 'the big three'*. Except that I buy Bleach because I don't have any friends or libraries to borrow it from. I have a soft spot for Bleach though, because it was my first favourite, so all the hating on the current arc makes me Anime cry a bit. It'd be nice if Viz did a speed up for Bleach. I prefer reading it in volumes *makes spur of the moment decision to drop scanlations and just wait for the US volume releases*

*(sorry Charred Knight, it's easier to say 'big three' than One Piece, Bleach and Naruto...so I'm going to keep using it)

I'm not fond of collecting cels because I think it's just ripping off some unknowing fans.

However, I bought a key animation drawing and cel of Golden Boy when I found out that it was drawn by Hideki Hamasu (animation supervisor of Perfect Blue). Of course, the seller who sold it to me for $10 total, still doesn't know a thing! Cel can be reproduced dozen times, but the drawing is not. Treasure hunting feel so good when you buy something drawn by A-list artist for cheap.
