Big whoop. There's plenty of Dark Horse and Proteus stuff I like, just, you know, maybe if you released Trade Paperbacks for a lot of your titles more than once every 6 months, you'd have a competitive amount of volumes. Though, I admit, I don't know how much the shelf space given to any particular publisher at the major chains is determined by "payola"; still:

more volumes released at a quicker rate = more shelf space.

Damn, I wish Dark Horse and Proteus would skip the monthly issue format entirely... well, aside from the anthology magazines, I guess (though, I don't read them... all I care about in Super Manga Blast! currently is Narutaru/Shadow Star...).

To those at the Manga panel, was there any word on Gunbuster at all? Earlier this year, it was expected to be released toward the end of 2003, and so far no updates on its progress has been released. I am very very anxious for the release Very Happy

At Anime Central, Manga gave a projected release date of late October '03, on either a DVD-10 or as a 2-disc set. In either case, the release would be sub-only. Presumably, this has been delayed, although no comments were offered at the BAAF panel.

But really, the problem isn't so much the manga itself it's their own titles too. Dark Horse isn't just a manga company, they do release their own titles which take up a lot of space at the book stores as well. Just look at how much space is set aside for their Star Wars trade paperbacks. They can't just look at the rack and say "we don't have that much space", they have to look at the big picture and see how much space their comic trade paperbacks AND manga graphic novels take up. A lot of stores mix manga and comics still, to them Dark Horse only releases one product. It's granted that Tokyopop releases a ton of stuff each month, but that's because they actually try to and have done A LOT to boost manga in the US. They've got major stores like Suncoast and FYE wraped around their finger, Darkhorse would actually have to work to get ahead, rather than rely on their name which isn't as popular as it was 3 years ago.

I guess it's a two fold problem for them, they have to both look at just how much their company as a whole releases each month and actually try to be competetive rather than release stuff when they feel like it. Hopefully when their new batch of self produced manga (Trigun, Berserk, and Hellsing) is released the'll have reevaluated their marketing plans.
