My favorite instance of creators appearing in their own work would probably be "Paprika"; Satoshi Kon voiced the tall bartender, while Yasutaka Tsutsui (the author of the original novel) voiced the short bartender. That's just so neat.
As for anime series where only 1 or 2 people do most if not all of the writing/directing/acting, the only one that comes to mind is "The World of GOLDEN EGGS," which I'm pretty sure had 2 guys doing most of the work. Even if I'm right though, that's probably not a show most anime fans would want to watch. |

That's craftsmanship! I believe it may last a long time as a viable species of work. I made a career out of it (editing of written material) that was pleasant because it was peaceful and quiet--and because doing a good detailed job is intrinsically satisfying for some. |

Last time I checked on one of your ANNCasts prior to them being shut down, they said they were fine.
Well, they're also the same geniuses who decided to make a stream-only release of an Oscar-nominated short, but who think a fighting game for a Jump series which bombed here the first time will sell in the U.S.
I just hope the FCC "deregulating" net neutrality doesn't change that.... |

yeah I don't even know if people cares about it in japan; sure she does not get voice aacting jobs anymore; but she wanted to move away from that even before the scandal; so it might not be accurate to blame the scandal for her lack of jobs when she was the one who wanted to change her career. |

And since this column inspired me to ask the question, yet it doesn't really have much to do with anime, I'll ask it here!
Dear Answerman, I see that your production company is entitled "MediaOCD", and I see how the OCD acronym ties quite nicely into the very-well established CD media format, resulting in a creatively punny company title. I also saw you use the term OCD to describe your perfectionism in regards to working on credit rolls in video post. I'd imagine that you're aware that the disorder characterized by the intense appeal of perfection and the overwhelming desire to focus on obtaining it is not Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), but instead Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD). The two are conceptually different disorders. So I ask if you are in fact aware of the difference, and whether you continue to use the OCD acronym simply because most of society is already in the habit of using the wrong acronym to refer to intense perfectionism, and you fear that readers may be confused or that you'd be forced to explain if you were to instead use the correct term? And, if you legitimately have OCPD (as do I), does it bother you when people continue to perpetuate the confusion between the two disorders?  ?

Attack on Titan is currently on Netflix as well. Netflix have also come a long way from what it used to be in terms of how anime is presented, with the majority of their catalogue now being dual language instead of dub only. |

I do think that the majority of people mentions OCD not to highlight a psychological complex they have but merely as a perjorative poke at a personal trait they have. The acronym is common enough, albeit wrong maybe as you point out, that people just use it off the cuff in everyday conversation. But since this is Justin using it, anything goes. |

Do Hulu or Netflix or iTunes ever replace their streams later with the updated home video versions, or offer them to begin with? I know Funimation regularly does, CR does not, TAN only for dubs I think (I remember still seeing the censored version of subbed Highschool of the Dead there). But even for Amazon Prime whether it's included as part of prime or you buy the digital downloads, you are still getting the broadcast version and not the home video version

Pleased to hear that streaming has finally become big business with substantial profits. Not only is the money good in its own right, but it also means fans and both Japanese and international companies are getting on board with what is a superior distribution method. It's a win-win-win situation.

Despite the ease with which you can get Stand Alone Complex on DVD, there's still that Blu-ray money sitting on the table for whatever licensor picks up the series for hi-def.
(The compilation movies are floating around, sure, but they have the janky, doesn't-mesh-with-rest-of-the-series Ocean dub. And most fans that would upgrade want the entire show, not just those edited versions.) |
