Osamu Tezuka's Marvelous Melmo Gets Reprint with New Materials

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Osamu Tezuka's 1970s manga Marvelous Melmo starring the size-shifting heroine Melmo is getting a reprint, this time with new materials uncovered in a locked drawer by Tezuka's daughter, Rumiko Tezuka. The first contents of the locked drawer were revealed in 2014 and included drafts of Marvelous Melmo's protagonist.

Osamu Tezuka's Marvelous Melmo Treasure Book includes all of the original manga, original layouts by Tezuka for chapters two, three, and 11, color illustrations and sketches, notes including the proposal for Apollo's Song and Melmo, an interview with Marvelous Melmo producer Jun Shimozaki, information about the series' music, and a synopsis of each episode.

Publisher Genshoka will release the book on July 26 for 4,500 yen (US$41).

Some of the 200 uncovered, unpublished materials found in Tezuka's desk drawer was previously published by Shinchosha's Shinchō literary magazine based on the theme of "eroticism" in 2016.

Other manga drafts and images have been discovered since Tezuka's death. Manga creator Leiji Matsumoto (Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999) unveiled nine unpublished manuscript pages in 2013 from Tezuka's early years. A manga drawn by the creator when he was in his late teens was discovered in 2012 after a former middle school classmate of Tezuka's held on to it for over six decades. The family of the late rakugo actor Katsura Harudanji III discovered nine drawings that Tezuka drew during his student days to promote a traveling show by Katsura Harudanji II.
