Spirited Away Weekend Numbers

Impressive but not exceptional.
Spirited Away has exited its first post-Oscar weekend having raked in an impressive $1,765,491 million at the box office, more than any other weekend prior to the Oscar. The final tally, $200 000 above early weekend estimates, made Spirited Away the 15th most successful movie of the weekend.
At only 711 theatres though, Spirited Away's per theatre average of $2,483 was higher than many other films playing in more theatres (but likewise, lower than a few movies engaged in limited theatrical runs).
Although impressive, a $2500 per theatre average in not great by box office standards and generally leads to a decrease in the number of theatres.
As initial reports made mention of an 800 theatre release, it is possible that Spirited Away's theatre count may increase somewhat in the next two weeks. However, it is likely that the theatre count will then quickly drop if the per screen average does not improve.
