IMAGI's Astro Boy Adds US$2.6 Million, Falls to #10

The Box Office Mojo website reports that David Bowers and IMAGI's computer-animated film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atom) manga earned an estimated US$2,588,000 in its third weekend on the box office chart in the United States. The film's weekend total only dropped 25.2% from last week. The US$65-million film has an estimated gross-to-date of US$15,073,000, and it dropped from #7 to #10 on the chart. With 1,918 theaters (1,102 less than last week), the Summit Entertainment-distributed film had an estimated per-screen average of US$1,349.
By comparison in their third weekend of release, Ponyo (2009) earned US$1,887,921 in 880 theaters (US$2,145 average), Dragonball: Evolution (2009) earned US$288,315 in 500 theaters (US$577 average), Speed Racer (2008) earned US$3,942,756 in 3,112 theaters (US$1,267 average), and IMAGI's TMNT film (2007) earned US$4,825,445 in 2,811 theaters (US$1,716 average).
Robert Zemeckis' computer-animated adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol novel opened at #1 in 3,683 theaters with an estimated US$31,000,000 (US$8,417 per theater).
