Manga-based film with Death Note's Tatsuya Fujiwara to ship on July 26

The British video distributor 4Digital Media announced on Wednesday that it will release the live-action Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler film on DVD on July 26. Mika Ohmori (Detroit Metal City) wrote and Tōya Satō directed this adaptation of Nobuyuki Fukumoto's Kaiji manga with Tatsuya Fujiwara (Death Note's Light) in the title role. Actress Yūki Amami (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, Socrates in Love) plays Rinko Endō, a loan shark — originally a male character in the manga — who convinces Kaiji to board a gambling ship to clear his 3.49-million-yen (US$36,000) debt.

Other stars who appear in the film include Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Note, Detroit Metal City), Teruyuki Kagawa (20th Century Boys, Tokyo Sonata), and Taro Yamamoto (Princess Racoon, Battle Royale). Before the film, the manga had already inspired a 26-episode anime series. A live-action film sequel is slated for next year.
