Section23 Films Adds Action Comedy TV Anime Needless (Update 2)

The North American anime distributor Section23 Films announced on Tuesday that it will release the television anime series Needless on Blu-ray Disc and DVD starting on February 15, 2011. The anime was licensed through Sentai Filmworks. The first 300-minute collection will be in English and in Japanese with English subtitles.

The 24-episode Needless anime adapted Kami Imai's manga of the same name last year. The action gag comedy with "bishōjo x violence" is set in 2130, when large swaths of Japan have been quarantined as polluted "Black Spots (BS)" in the aftermath of World War III. However, there are people who have settled behind the massive walls of the Black Spots, where they have developed mysterious powers. The city people on the outside have a label for the Black Spot people they have ostracized: "Needless."

Sentai Filmworks and Section23 Films will also release the You're Under Arrest: Fast & Furious television anime series (also known as You're Under Arrest Second Season) in a complete 650-minute DVD collection on February 1. The fourth DVD collection of Eyeshield 21 will ship on February 8, and the fourth DVD collection of Gintama will ship on February 22.

Update: More background information added. Needless will have both English and Japanese soundtracks.

Update 2: Section23 Films has confirmed that its Blu-ray and DVD releases will both have "The Secret of Saint Lilly Academy" anime shorts. In Japan, Avex Marketing had released these six two-minute shorts exclusively on Blu-ray, not on DVD.
