Comiket 82 Ties 'Turnstile' Attendance Record at 560,000

posted on by Egan Loo

An estimated 210,000 people came to the third day of the Comic Market (Comiket) 82 event in Tokyo on Sunday. That is about 30,000 more people than Comiket 81's third-day attendance last winter, and 10,000 more people than Comiket 80's third-day attendance last summer. 160,000 attended Comiket 82's first day on Friday, and 190,000 attended the second day.

Comiket 82 reported an attendance total of 560,000 across all three days — tying the record set in Summer of 2009 (Comiket 76) and Summer of 2010 (Comiket 78). Comiket does not have unique passes for visitors, so a person who attends all three days would be counted three times.

Comiket 79's attendance total in December of 2010 was 520,000, and Comiket 80's attendance total last August was 540,000. However, Comiket 81 dipped down to 500,000 last December. The committee that runs Comiket cited the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster and the unprecedented high yen for the drop in overseas visitors. However, with this summer's event, Comiket has rebounded back to its previous numbers.

Comic Market 83 will run from December 29 to December 31 at the same location, the Tokyo Big Sight event center.
