3rd Madoka Magica Film's New Footage Debuts on Japanese TV

New opening song by ClariS previewed; Madoka actress Aoi Yūki reveals story details

Fuji TV's morning program Mezamashi Terebi aired a new feature on Gekijō-ban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica [Shinpen]: Hangyaku no Monogatari (Madoka Magica The Movie -Rebellion-) on Friday. The program premiered new footage from the upcoming third Madoka Magica film, including a preview of the opening theme song "Colorful" by ClariS.

The feature begins with a preview of previously unseen footage before Mezamashi Terebi interviews Madoka Kaname's voice actress Aoi Yūki. (As in the last feature, the program host and Yūki make good-natured parodies of anime studio SHAFT's famous signature shots of head tilts.)

The program host first asks Yūki to recite a quote in Madoka's voice, and then Yūki unveils the character design for a new magical girl in the third film, Nagisa Momoe. The host notes that Nagisa is a little shorter than the other girls, and tries to press Yūki for more information. Yūki admits she wants to spill the details, but can't.

Yūki then introduces the new enemy character, Nightmare. She emphasizes that Nightmare is not a witch. Instead of using traditional 2D animation, the movie filmed a physical puppet of Nightmare, and Mezamashi Terebi shows brief footage of the results.

Next, Yūki reveals that there will be magical girl vs. magical girl battles in the new film — but defers from answering any more of the host's questions. The voice actress does note that she and her fellow cast members talked excitedly about how amazing this film was turning out, even while they were at the recording studio.

Aniplex describes the story of the third film:

[Note: Highlight the text below for the story, which contains spoilers for the end of the television series and first two films]

Madoka Kaname. Once a normal girl who led a happy life, she sacrificed herself to save other magical girls from the cruel fate that awaited them. Unable to let her memories of Madoka die, magical girl Homura Akemi continues to fight alone in the world that Madoka left behind, dreaming of meeting that nostalgic smiling face one more time...

Akiyuki Shinbo and Yukihiro Miyamoto are directing the film at SHAFT with original character designs from manga creator Ume Aoki (Hidamari Sketch). Yuki Kajiura will be providing the music, while musical units ClariS and Kalafina will perform the movie's opening theme and ending theme ("Kimi no Gin no Niwa" or Your Silver Garden), respectively. The main cast will be returning from the television series and previous two films, with Yūki as Madoka Kaname, Chiwa Saitō as Homura Akemi, Eri Kitamura as Sayaka Miki, Kaori Mizuhashi as Mami Tomoe, Ai Nonaka as Kyōko Sakura, and Emiri Katō as Kyubey.

The third film will open in Japan on October 26. The film will then open in the United States, Canada, and France this winter. Aniplex announced at Japan Expo in Paris that the film will debut in France in November. Aniplex aims to release the third film in still more countries worldwide, just as it did for the first two films. Japanese theaters will begin selling the second batch of advance tickets, each with one of six different special poster boxes, for 1,500 yen (about US$15) on Saturday.
