On Monday April 14, MVM will release the series Girls und Panzer on DVD. (The Blu-ray edition has been pushed back to May 14.) The story centers around high school girls who drive tanks that exist in real life, as they compete in teams. Mizushima (Squid Girl, Another, Blood-C, xxxHOLiC) helmed the anime at Moetan's studio ACTAS (with 3D CGI by Strike Witches' Graphinica) with Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!, Romeo × Juliet, Saint Seiya Omega) in charge of scripts.
Also on Monday, Manga Entertainment will release a complete series edition of KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple (50 episodes over eight DVD discs). In this martial-arts comedy series, Kenichi is an ordinary student who has been bullied all through high school. Then a girl convinces him to join her dojo and become a disciple of many martial arts styles. Director Hajime Kamegaki (Naruto Shippūden, Fushigi Yuugi) and the animators of TMS Entertainment adapted Shun Matsuena's manga of the same name, and the anime ran in Japan from October of 2006 to September of 2007.
Studio Canal will release a new 'Blu-ray plus DVD' combo edition of the 1994 Ghibli film Pom Poko, directed by Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies). The film follows a group of magically shapechanging 'racoon dogs' as they try to save their natural Japanese habitat from being destroyed by human developers.
