One Room VR App Debuts This Summer

Event with playable demo of game to take place on May 3-4

SMIRAL Animation announced on Friday that the VR app based on the One Room anime will debut in early summer, and will retail for 960 yen (about US$9). An event that will feature a playable demo of the game will take place on May 3 and 4 at the Akihabara UDX Gallery Next 2.

The crowdfunding campaign to fund the VR project launched in December, and ended successfully with a final total of 4,825,004 yen (about US$45,017) raised, achieving its initial 1 million yen (about US$8,830) goal, and achieving all stretch goals.

The VR app for iOS and Android devices features the character Yui Hanasaka from the first season's second episode. Gugenka's Takuya Igarashi is creating the 3DCG animation and Yui's voice actress M.A.O is recording new lines for the project.

The base VR experience will be titled "One Room VR - Seifuku-hen" (Uniform Edition). The crowdfunding campaign funded stretch goals to add an "Apron-hen" (Apron Edition) where Yui is in an apron during all the scenes, a "Mizugi-hen" (Swimsuit Edition), ear-cleaning voices, and a life-size AR figure of Yui through Gugenka's HoloModels app.

The first season of One Room premiered in Japan in January 2017. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan and describes the story with a "first-person narrative":

You are the protagonist. A new project in virtual anime from SMIRAL Animation that also brought you the "Anitore" series and "Makuranodanshi." This time, the project is about 3 stories that develop in your (one) room.

The anime will get a second season this year.

Kantoku (The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat., Garakowa -Restore the World- original character designer) designed the original characters for One Room, and Yasuhiro Okuda (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha) adapted those character designs for animation. Typhoon Graphics (animation production assistance for Digimon Adventure tri. films) animated the series.

A spinoff anime series titled Room Mate: One Room side M premiered in April 2017. The series told "another story" featuring male characters.
