Niantic and The Pokémon Company International announced the Pokémon GO Summer Tour 2019 events for the Pokémon GO smartphone game on Thursday. The Pokémon GO Fest event will return to Chicago, Illinois from June 13-16. Similar events will be held in Dortmund, Germany from July 4-7, and in Asia with details announced later.
This year's event in Chicago will expand from two to four days and return to Grant Park. The event will incorporate more than 300 acres of walking space. Players will again join players in the park and around the world to participate in challenges to unlock rewards, and Special Research exclusive to the event will offer separate rewards. Tickets will go on sale in a new in-app system later this month.
The event in Dortmund will change from a Safari Zone event to a Pokémon GO Fest event and take place at Westfalenpark. Tickets will go on sale this spring.
Players who do not attend the real-world Summer Tour events will be able to participate in special in-game challenges to unlock global rewards. In addition, Niantic announced that its upcoming monthly Community Day events for the game will be held on May 19, June 8, July 21, and August 3.
The Pokémon GO Fest events debuted with the first event in Chicago's Grant Park in July 2017, which marked the game's first anniversary. The Pokémon GO Fest 2018: A Walk in the Park event was held in Lincoln Park in Chicago in July 2018. The game has also had Safari Zone and other events in locations worldwide.
Mobile app data analysis organization Sensor Tower reported in January that the Pokémon GO smartphone game earned an estimated US$795 million worldwide in 2018, about a 35% increase over its revenue from 2017. Overall, the game has earned US$2.2 billion since its launch in July 2016.
