GKIDS announced during its panel at Anime NYC on Saturday that it will screen Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue film in the United States in a new 4K restoration, opening on October 3.

The 1997 Perfect Blue feature film was the directorial feature debut for Satoshi Kon, who went on to make Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent and Paprika before his death in 2010. Set in contemporary Tokyo, the story concerns a pop singer, Mima, who tries to develop an acting career, only to experience threats and traumas as her mind breaks down and she is tormented by a ghostly version of her singer self. Manga Entertainment released the film on VHS and DVD. GKIDS and Shout! Factory released the film on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in March 2019, and released it again in a steelbook edition in September 2021.
GKIDS and Fathom Events screened the film in 500 U.S. theaters for two days in September 2018. The screenings earned US$420,881 at the box office. GKIDS, Iconic Events Releasing, and Anime Expo screened the film as part of Anime Expo's AX Cinema Nights screenings in September 2023 to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary.
Kon based his Perfect Blue anime film on Yoshikazu Takeuchi's Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis novel, which Seven Seas Entertainment shipped in February 2018. Seven Seas also shipped Takeuchi's second Perfect Blue novel, Perfect Blue: Awaken from a Dream, in April 2018.
