Akira Reissue Is Number Five At UK-Ireland Cinema Box-Office

Film earned £881,306 from 412 sites, more than previous reissues of Akira combined


The website Screen Daily reports that the cinema reissue of Katsuhiro Ōtomo's classic 1988 film Akira in UK and Ireland cinemas is at number five at the UK-Ireland box-office. According to Screen Daily, the film earned £881,306 from 412 sites, at an average of £2,139. (The report also gives a slightly higher total for the overall 2026 re-release of Akira, of £883,200.)

The four higher films at this week's UK box-office, in descending order, are The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Project Hail Mary, The Drama and Lee Cronin's The Mummy.

Screen Daily further notes that the new release of Akira has earned more than the combined totals of previous re-releases of Otomo's film. Akira earned £357,792 when it was reissued in 2020, and £114,952 when it was reissued in 2016.

The current reissue, distributed by Anime Limited, is in both subtitled and English-dubbed versions. There are venue details at https://akirafilm.co.uk.

The film was originally released in Japan in 1988, directed by Katsuhiro Ōtomo and adapted from his own epic manga. The story is described as follows:

"July, 1988— World War III breaks loose. Then, in 2019, in megalopolis Tokyo...

"As the leader of a group of young robust delinquents, Kaneda spent his nights tearing through the urban wastes, racing his motorbike against rival groups. One night while riding with his gang, his friend Tetsuo suddenly encounters a strange boy― the product of human experimentation— and is injured in the ensuing crash. Shortly thereafter, a military squadron appears on the scene to take the boy and Tetsuo away to an army research facility. Determined to free Tetsuo from capture, Kaneda sneaks into the army research lab. However, a regimen of extreme experimental procedures has awakened a new power in his friend, and now he is consumed by madness…"
