ACCESSORIZE REAL CLOTHES ILLUSTRATION
What's It About?

In fashion illustration that highlights characters, accessories suited to their style are essential. Accessories allow for boundless expression of a character's individuality, depending on the combination of motifs. This book defines “fashion accessories” broadly as any items worn on the body or clothing for style, featuring illustrations of a wide range of items that adorn from head to toe.
From rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets to hats, belts, and hair accessories, the illustrations also capture the texture and silhouette of materials like ribbons, pearls, and chains, as well as the sheen of metals and intricate detailing—all must-see highlights. It's a book filled with fashion illustrations so vividly rendered, you'll feel compelled to reach out and touch them.
The cover illustration is newly drawn by Mirinana Nanakuse, known for her precise yet bold depictions of dignified characters adorned with beautiful ornaments. Book design is handled by the designer behind the creative direction of the “Real Clothes Illustration” series, incorporating each creator's unique worldview into a stylish layout.
At the end of the book, readers will find illustrated columns about accessories, fashion-related commentary from each creator, and QR codes linking to their X and Instagram accounts for immediate following.

Rating:

To make a long story short, if you have any interest in fashion illustrations, pick up this book. Forty different illustrators draw their best designs with a focus on accessories in a variety of styles, from punk to Gothic Lolita and nearly everything in between. It's a great collection.
More specifically, this book looks at the smaller details of fashion design and creation. The “accessorize real clothes” mantra is one that's largely followed – even if you can't buy some of the pieces, you could easily make them, provided you have the skills. This is especially true for BOMHAT's pages; they specialize in tights decorated with open spaces and ribbons, ankle socks, and lightly bejeweled nails. Even if you just have a hot glue gun and some bows, you could replicate some of their looks. Ribbons are also a feature of Narumi Hosokawa's designs, and several artists have the modern equivalent of 18th century beauty patches that could presumably be cut out of adhesive material and stuck on; Hosokawa's star-shaped freckles are particularly wonderful.
Most of the artists favor a lot of silver jewelry for all genders, as well as decorative glasses, but sun and otherwise. There are more designs specifically for women in here, but men and androgynous characters are also present, and the same attention to detail and care is taken for all of them. There's no artist who feels like they phoned in their work, and some, like Satoukusuri goes all out with polished, detailed designs filled with delicate tracery and filigree jewelry. Color palettes do tend towards the dark (with a few notable exceptions, such as Chanhum and Nowri), but as these are fashion suggestions, readers can take inspiration from them and tailor them to their own styles.
While much of the text is in Japanese with only a few pages having English translation, the book is still very accessible. Each new artist's pages have two QR codes for their social media, usually Instagram and Twitter, and they'll often include their webpages as well. It is a little odd that about twenty pages in the middle of the book are printed on matte paper instead of glossy (possibly this is because of the early nature of review copies), but overall, ACCESSORIZE REAL CLOTHES ILLUSTRATION is the kind of artbook you can return to again and again for new ideas.
