In this thread we talk about mahjong, and anime. and an anime about mahjong.
Saki (TV)
Liked: Crazy-ass special-effects style of play, especially in the final round of Episode 1, because honestly the only way you're going to make a tabletop game interesting is by making it way more epic than it really is. It's also interesting to see that the lead character is not some prodigy who beats everyone else, but rather takes a perfectly neutral score every single time. I mean, let's face it, Akagi is just too much of a God character. Saki seems much more relatable. Disliked: Japanese scoring system makes no damn sense, I grew up playing a hybrid Filipino/Chinese style of mahjong. But maybe if I watch this long enough I'll figure out how Japan does it. Also, the supporting cast doesn't interest me much. I suppose it really is meant to be all about the game, because the characters are fairly standard stereotypes (despite possible yuri content). I am also intrigued to see that Rie Kugimiya is playing a non-tsundere midget for once. Everyone else's thoughts? |

I ended up watching this in anime club. Everyone thought they would enjoy it watching the first episode during anime review day. Then they found out how generic, and boring it actually was.
Although for some reason a season 2 would seem interesting. What do you think? |
