'AnimeNerd' has an update on how a live-action American feature film adaptation of the superb Japanese anime series "Neon Genesis: Evangelion" is going:
"I recently contacted Tiffany Grant (who voiced Asuka Langley Sohryu in the English dub of the show) about the status and asked about casting and directors as well. She contacted me back and told me that the film is on hold for the moment because they are in talks with several big names to direct. I didn't get the list on who those names were, but I did get some interesting casting ideas. She told me that Hugo Weaving would make a great Gendo (Shinji's father) and Jennifer Garner as Misato. She really liked the idea of Jennifer Garner, because she hadn't heard that before. As for the roles of Shinji, Rei and Asuka(to whom she voices in the English adaptation of the anime), she said they would probably cast relative unknowns who were around 14 to 15. When I asked if Daniel Radcliffe, Lindsay Lohan and the actress who played Go-Go in "Kill Bill" were among names beforehand, she told me that they would be too old by now. Oh yeah, Grant also said if she were to cameo in the film (which I am sure the English voice actors probably will), she would love to play Asuka's mother. NOTE: Tiffany Grant is the wife of the producer of the live-action film as well". Well, yeah, Paul Anderson, and not the Magnolia one, is a name I'm guessing is on ADV's short list of directors within their price range.
Him or Uwe Boll. EDIT: Actually, if we're talking B-list directors, I would be more likely to watch this if Tobe Hooper were directing, since Hooper is responsible for one of my favourite "cheese" films of all time, Lifeforce... space vampire zombies overrunning London! And naked Mathilda May! |

I doubt the Live action Eva will ever come out. there have been rumors of a live action doom, Duke Nukem and a bunch of otheres that never saw the light of day. Eva will be the same way.
but then agien on the other hand there were rumors of Freddy vs Jason and Alien Vs Predator way before they came out. still ill believe it when I see it. and as to the production concept art thats come out that doesnt mean jack. Concept art comes out all the time with the movie not going anywere. |

I dunno, I get the the impression that this project is going to happen, though I wouldn't be surprised if the movie's still 3-4 years (or more) down the road. WETA wouldn't have made it a top-priority project if people weren't serious about it. I'm much more concerned about it being made but poorly. I hope Paul Anderson isn't the director who gets the nod; although he's pretty good with action and special effects, I have yet to be convinced that he could handle a strong drama. I'd much rather see Brian Singer (of X-Men movie fame) or, better yet, someone like Ridley Scott do it. |

From what I understand Doom may very well still see the light of day. Okay so its all still rumours but the ROCK said in an interview with Empire Magazine that he may be starring in it. |

If I keep taking these grains of salt, I'll end up dying of too much sodium intake
 I'd love to see a live-action Eva, but I don't hold out much hope for it; not until we have absolute concrete evidence on it.

Heh, i'd rather have Anderson any given day than Uwe Boll (not only did Boll screw up House of the Dead, but now he's set to direct another favorite videogame franchise; Bloodrayne. *Shudders*) Atleast me and my friends liked (Paul's interpertation of) Resident Evil for what it was. However i agree with Mathilda May's *ahem* best scenes from Lifeforce. (Which runs cheek to cheek with Return of the Living dead's linda quigley's "assets. *drooling* ) |

You know, far be it from me to be a spoil sport, but I *pray* they don't put ANY of the original English voice cast in this movie. They're nice people but this is a $100m venture, not a half-hour anime dub. They need top-shelf talent for this and unfortunately ADV's army of dub actors don't really fit the bill. If you want to give them non-speaking roles, great, but I mean.. shoehorning in appearances for voice actors who an absolutely microscopic portion of the audience for this film will recognize or appreciate is a really bad idea if you're trying to make a film that's accessable to as many people as possible, which is what you're gonna have to do if you want this film to succeed. Leave it to the pros, please, and leave the voice actors back in the dub studio where they belong.
Of course, this is all assuming this movie even happens, which I highly doubt it will. For the person who said "WETA wouldn't have made it a top-priority project", that statement makes no sense. WETA is a work-for-hire effects studio and is given projects to choose from for which they are paid to do the effects. They don't work without having the money for the effects, they can't put something into production themselves and as far as anyone knows they haven't actually been hired to do anything but create concept art for this thing, which anyone can do for any film they can dream up. I could go to WETA right now with a million bucks and say "Hey, I want to make a live action Tenchi Muyo movie!" and pay them to do concept art and if Richard Taylor loves Tenchi he'd probably even appear in some promotional videos to help sell the idea to studios I'd petition for backing. It's no more an indicator of a film's likeliness to be made than anything else. I'm sure this is a "dream" project for them, but if anything, they're going to be a hinderance, since WETA is the most expensive effects house in the world and they're going to drive the cost of this thing way, way up. If this film gets made at all I guarantee you most of the effects will be farmed out to smaller, cheaper studios. As of right now, the EVA movie is a press release with a whole lot of bad ideas and fanboy dreams floating around it and that's it. We need to wait for hard, concrete evidence from major respected hollywood trades before believing *anything* anyone says about it, most of all the companies lobbying for the money to make it. |

I'm not one of those anti-US because I like anime people. I got fed up with US cinema a while before I got into anime. Its just most of the blockbusters are unoriginal crap. Most of them mainly use pre-established ideas from other films or media and make them worse. The Dawn of the Dead remake is a landmark of this. I will admit some of the licensed films have been good, say the Spider-Man series is great, but most of it just sucks. JMO.

The Doom movie was in the rumor mill for years, however with the recent success of Doom 3 chances are that this time it will get put into production.
