Just curious to know if you guys are able to keep up with watching new anime as it is aired series every week, or if you prefer to wait until the series is complete before watching it?
I'm terrible at following anime on a "per season" basis and I always miss my chance following a series when people are first discussing them. In fact, it's taken me a few years before I was able to finally see shows like Haruhi and K-On!--way after their popularity died down from the initial broadcast. While I'm glad I get to watch them, it can feel a little lonely watching a series this way. Many people, offline and online, are already talking about the next greatest thing and you're trying to play "catch up" with stuff that's considered old. |

Personally, I much prefer watching anime as it is broadcasted/simulcasted/fansubbed. Part of the fun of watching anime is discussing ones own thoughts about a particular show and learning about what others think of that same show. That's not to say that I have time to watch everything each season. But I try to pick 4-6 shows to follow each week. That's about 2-2.5 hours a week invested in watching current anime, which I don't see as all that much time myself.

Anyways, I usually wait for a series to complete and then marathon it in one or two days. It is lonelier yes, but there is none of the suspense of waiting for the next episode. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing though.. |

Honestly, I'd find it a lot easier to watch if it was on TV. As it is now, I mostly just buy boxsets I know I'll like, and watch it in chunks.

I feel similarly. Following along with discussion threads often helps me pick up on things I missed while watching the actual episodes; if I'm marathoning a series, I don't take breaks and gestate on what happened nearly so much. |

When a series first airs, I try to watch each weekly episode for the first few weeks to see if I want to continue watching the show. If it's something I'll continue watching, then I wait for about 5 or more new episodes to be available at a time before viewing. I'm a pretty patient person, and I don't mind waiting. I'd rather spend a couple hours on my day off catching up on each series than sit for 20-30 minutes at a time watching an episode.

I like to watch it as it airs. I use spoiler[animecalender.net] to track the shows and check them off as I go. I'll typically start the season watching about 25 shows a week and then try to cut it down to 10-15 as the season progresses. Too keep up I'll watch 2 or 3 episodes a day M-F and then marathon the rest on the weekend. Because of the high volume of shows at the beginning of the season I run behind for the first month, right now I'm only caught up to last Thursday.

Yeah, I keep myself up to date on the latest stuff that interests me in the current season and watch it as it comes out. In addition I rent older stuff from Netflix and buy stuff. For instance right now I'm watching 18 various ongoing series and OVAs, Netflixing 2 series, and watching 7 others through streaming and television.
I'm generally watching about 15-20 things at a time. Right now I'm doing 28 which is bit much for me, and I really need to sit down and work on some things.

I've been an anime fan for about 13 years, and at this point, most of what I watch are new/recently fansubbed shows. I've watched nearly all of the older shows that I'm genuinely interested in. Rather than continuing to build a backlog of 'to watch' shows, I just pick whatever is most interesting in a season (maybe 3-4 shows), and usually ignore the rest. Maybe a third of the episodes I watch are older shows.
...so I have time for ongoing anime, but I hardly ever watch old stuff anymore. |

Most of it. There's always a bunch of awesome stuff that comes out each season it's kinda hard to keep up, admittedly. I think I have some shows from last year to check out still

I find it more enjoyable to marathon through a series than its scheduled broadcast. The fun of watching an anime by its broadcast is the discussions, which marathoning looses if you're late to watching that show. I enjoy watching shows as they air for discussion values, but marathoning gives me a better enjoyment value. Of course, marathoning a rewatch gives nearly the same feeling.

I usually follow the guidelines espoused here, but my lag is only a year or two at most (hardware not really being a huge constraint with anime...). A few notable exceptions will be able to grab me during their original broadcast, but I would almost always rather wait until I can watch the whole show at once.

I usually break up my anime watching into categories. I have a rewatch category, new stuff category, older show category, and shows I'm watching with friend category. The % break down for each varies a bit, but I like to have a fine balance between new ongoing shows and older shows that are finished.
Like some were saying, part of the fun of watching an ongoing show is to discuss it with others. In my opinion it's pretty easy to do so... 1 episode per week? It's not like you have to do it for every on going show. For example, last season I was current every episode of Infinite Stratos but I took my time more with GoSick. The other benefit of being current with an ongoing show is you don't have to worry as much about spoilers in the future o.o. |

I keep up with three ongoing series on television (the dubbed Bleach, Kekkaishi, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood), and one on-going series on-line (Naruto on Crunchyroll).
It's not really difficult for me, because I time-shift the television episodes. I record them saturday night/very early sunday morning, then watch them on sunday. |

Same, I got into the anime fandom via the Avatar: the last airbender fandom and there was always tons of discussion about each new episode and general speculation when the show was on break. Heck, after so many years of participating in discussions I think I notice plot twists earlier and being able to go "aha CALLED IT!" is rather fun.
