Don't know if this has been discussed before (probably not), but with all the talk of Anime being adapted into live-action films in Hollywood (i.e Death Note, Akira, Cowboy Bebop and etc of late) I thought I'd flip the scenario. I mean with more Western properties turning to the Anime medium (e.g The Animatrix, G.I Joe Sigma 6, Batman: Gotham Knight, Halo: Legends and the recent Anime adaptations of Iron Man, Wolverine, X-Men, Super Natural and I believe the upcoming Mass Effect movie will be done as an Anime as well if I'm not mistaken) it got me thinking what other western properties (i.e comic books, video games, tv shows, film, books and etc) would be interesting if they were adapted as Anime.

And I'm not just saying this as everything should be done in Anime, but what properties do you think would translate well into the Anime medium.

For example my first choice, which may come off as odd, would be an Anime adaptation of the 2007 film Stardust. Despite it not being that big a hit I really loved the film and watching it I felt like it was a Miyazaki like film. I could easily see it translating well for Anime audiences if it was done by Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki.

FYI, Stardust the movie is an adaptation of Stardust the novel by Neil Gaiman. If someone wanted to make an anime about it, they'd probably need Gaiman's approval.

The company behind Pani Poni Dash should tackle Tiny Toons Adventures, Freakazoid, and Animaniacs.

I have thought for years that an anime of Battletech (the setting of "Mechwarrior," for those who've only played the PC games) would be totally awesome. Not just for the uniquely Western mecha authentic: lumbering, 100-ton behemoths, as opposed to the samurai-inspired, lithe Gundam. But also because it has a rich backstory and interesting setting.

Along with many other favorite SF novels: Metaplanetary (Tony Daniel), Sister Alice (Robert Reed), The Child Garden (Geoff Ryman).

And even though there are already anime of Frances Hodgson Burnett stories "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess," I'd love to see some modern, high-budget adaptions. Like if KyoAni animated them...that would be so awesome.

Ben 10 and Generator Rex could use an anime revamp. Both shows have really good premises, interesting characters, and potential that goes nowhere. They kind of have American Cartoon Syndrome where they can be good, but if there are, say, 15 episodes a season, 4-5 focus on a plot while the rest revolve around finding a date, monster of the week, or some other nonsense. Now, of course plenty of anime have these problems as well, but if you give them to a dedicated studio (Gainax, Madhouse, Bones etc) who will come up with a nice plot, all the shows would really improve from some sick fighting scenes. American cartoons aren't known for insane fights scenes, at least not on the level of Gurren Lagann, Black Lagoon, or Fullmetal Alchemist, and shows that involve a boy that turns into aliens and another that features a boy that has robot parts grow out of him could really use an anime touch.

I hope this doesn't come off sound like I dislike American cartoons, because I do love them. I watch both Ben 10 and GR every Saturday, but that doesn't stop me from thinking they could use a touch up.

Wow, that reminds me, I'd LOOVVVE to see an anime adaptation of Danny Phantom! The premise is awesome and would make a great shonen-type show. The show itself fell flat for me, but I could tell in the right hands, it could be really good.

Some people have already made anime-inspired cartoon OPs on youtube. Check it out sometime.

I always felt that popular fantasy novels here which are too long, and would be too costly for a movie budget, would be best in the anime format. For example I'd love to see an anime series based off Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series - a sci-fi/fantasy mesh. There's no way this series would work budget-wise for a live action tv series, and no way they could ever satisfy fans with just a single movie, or a trilogy because there are TONS of books and tons of characters.

I think stuff like this could work if there's enough interest enough on Japan's end to warrant airing a series over there. The book series (or any cult fantasy series in general like Dragon Riders of Pern) already has enough of a fanbase to guarantee some good sales in general with the book crowd, and that's not even touching upon anime fans in general who'd try it out.

Like mentioned, I love Gaiman's Stardust - but I don't support the Ghilbi approach because they're very loose on their adaptions, and the live action film we got was loose as it was. I rather an adaption that was true to the book instead.

Other book properties I'd love to see animated:

Harry Potter
Percy Jackson
Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders/Assassin's Apprentice
Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, American Gods, Graveyard Book
Garth Nix's Abhorsen
Dune

I would be suggesting George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series as well, but HBO is actually attempting a tv series right now, and though I worry about their budget and some future battles, they're doing an awesome job so far.

Comic Book properties: Anything Vertigo, but my top choices:

Neil Gaiman's Sandman series
Fables
Y the Last Man
The Unwritten

And oh yeah, Scott Pilgrim. Loved the movie, but the comic is 6 vols long, and that's plenty of material for a tv series.

It might prove amusing to have Yasuomi Umetsu direct an animated version of The Blues Brothers, which I think would fit his proclivity for exaggerated action and keeping his tongue in his cheek well, although he probably trouble getting funding and end up being forced to make it a hentai, leading to a scene wherein Jake, Elwood and Cab Callow... I think that I've just had an evil thought that would be subject to moderation if fully expressed.

Oh, and somebody should make an anime version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, since by this point, the number of divergent versions of the story has become part of the joke.

I'd agree with Ben 10.. the premise is interesting enough and a variety of aliens would be cool. The show suffers from typical American Cartoon Syndrome where everything must be episodic, dumbed down, and overall poorly executed and just there to be mindless entertainment for kids. Make it a sci-fi anime where they go to different worlds like Outlaw Star and it'd be perfect.

I'd like a true Batman anime, or for Japan to fix American superhero characters in general. Stuff like Gotham Knight and Marvel's recent stuff don't count because they're still written by Americans and forced to follow the same formula. I mean true anime remakes; like a set 52 episode series about Batman where they're not afraid to kill off the villains, and actually END THE SERIES. Something like Darker Than Black would be interesting. Sort of like what Japan did with Powerpuff Girls with Powerpuff Girls Z by giving it a plot and better developed characters.

Harry Potter is an obvious one as well. I'm not too big a Harry Potter fan, but I'd totally watch an anime about it; and it seems popular enough in Japan.

Avatar the Last Airbender also seems obvious, the end result ended up being pretty generic and pretty much a watered down version of Naruto in the end, but if Japan actually took a crack at it I'd be interested in seeing their version of it and see if it can be made interesting.

Well, I suppose any action cartoon would benefit from an anime remake in the end. Less censorship, better writing, less afraid to tackle more mature subjects and stuff.

More obscure.. Vampire the Masquerade; with all the awesome clans and rules and regulations of being a vampire, there's loads of possibilities. A simple anime adaption of the Bloodlines game would be fine as well.

I second Harry Potter! And I HATE American Cartoon syndrome, which is why I watch anime instead.

I think there's a CLAMP Artbook I have where Mokona geeks out over those books.

And Star Trek Voyager.

We need a CLAMP Captain Janeway, world.

The StarCraft games would make an excellent anime series. The storyline is complex enough and it has a good cast. Not to mention it has the potential for some pretty cool action.

Would like to try Gargoyles out. I think they can add more fighting styles and add more lore to other different gargoyle clans in the world. So I guess I would like a more expanded to the world of Gargoyles rather than a re-imagining of it.

The other would be My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Would love to see how Japanese style humor can take direction for the characters. Different take I guess, like with the Powerpuff Girls anime.

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, American Gods,

Funny you should mention Neil Gaiman's American Gods, as if I'm not mistaken HBO is planning on adapting it into a Television series after the huge success that Game of Thrones has been so far.

Also with this "American cartoon syndrome" that you guys are bringing up, there is a term for it and it's called being "episodic". It's not a trait that's just limited to American cartoons as there are anime, albeit a smaller faction, that are episodic and don't really follow a linear cohesive storyline (e.g the first two that come to mind are Azumanga Daioh and Ebichu the House Keeping Hamster). Also it's not something that's just strictly limited to American cartoons as various television shows, whether they be sitcoms, dramas and etc, are episodic as well with the occasional story arc that spans several episodes.

I wholeheartedly support an anime version of Hitchhiker's. In fact, animated is the only way to do the late, great Douglas Adams right.

It would be cool if someone could make an anime version of Aliens. I'd love to see Giger's xenomorphs doing battle with the Colonial Marines on LV-426.
