This doesn't happen very often, but every now and then I'll start a show that for one reason or another Im not that excited about, and then it not only turns out to be good, but its a masterpiece. This happened most recently with me with Gurren Lagann. From the ratings here on ANN I knew it was going to be good but because Im not a big mech fan I didn't expect to love it. Other unexpected masterpieces for me were:
Noein to your other self Princess Tutu Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade Gunslinger Girl All of these I was pretty sure I was going to like, but didn't think I would love. Does this happen very often, and with which shows? |

Of the five you mention, I've seen three and ranked two as masterpiece (Princess Tutu and Gunslinger Girl) and one as excellent (Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade). According to ANN you are 11th most like-minded person here. (Among the regulars I see here, only Dormcat and Murph76 are more like-minded).
Gunslinger Girl also hit me by surprise. I got it because it belonged to a genre I like and it way, way exceeded my expectations. Paprika was another for me - it was the moment I got into anime. A friend took me to see it at the Melbourne Film Festival in 2007. I had no expectations at all. I was mostly indifferent to anime before I walked in, and a total convert by the time the opening credits had finished. Noir surprised me in a different way. After Paprika it was one of the first anime I checked out, simply because my nephew lent me his fansub copy. I never much liked the trailer but liked the series reasonably well at first. But it rapidly became my number one re-watch series (and still is). Eve no Jikan didn't sound promising from its description but its ranking here at ANN was pretty high at the time (and still is). I loved it from the start. I remember hanging out for the many months between Crunchyroll releases. |

I've not yet been surprised by any masterpieces where I expected mediocrity of less, although Cowboy Bebop was a surprise masterpiece in that happened upon it almost randomly on the night of its first American broadcast with no expectations.
What was the discouraging trailer like? I don't know if the Australian releases shared trailers with the American ones, but there was a really lousy trailer that I saw on an ADV Madlax disc that was just a awkward mash of scenes from the first episode with the, "nowaru," line from "Coppelia's Casket" repeated ad nauseam. The earliest trailer was just the series opening, which also happens to be half of what sold me on it in the first place. |

The opening. Finally, we have a point of major disagreement  , although I have slowly warmed to it over time. I think I was hostile to the girls with guns concept initially. Yare! How I've changed.

This has only happened to me once, with Major. Baseball sounded a bit boring, since I didn't really know much about baseball. I really can't remember the last time I got so hooked into an anime.
The relationships between characters was so believable and natural, and seeing Goro surprise people with his fastball never got old. Although 4th and 6th season weren't as strong as the other seasons were, Major remains as one of the best animes I've ever seen. |

Things I've seen that would probably fit the bill here:
Aquarian Age-Sign For Evolution-At first this looked to me like it was going to be just another super-powered action show but then it got a really good story going that got me hooked. In addition the action was decent, I really liked the music, and I hadn't seen many anime where the characters were college aged. Beck-This was a blind buy because it was cheap I had no real expectations for it. However, I was surprised when it was about music and starting a band and the music was actually darn good. It's rare to see an anime about the subject. I also liked the characters a lot. Kemonozume-When I first started watching this I thought "Wow this s*** is ugly as hell", but I stuck with it and found out it has it's quirks but there was also a lot to like that overshadowed all that in addition the story was a refreshing take on a more adult romance story spiced up with monsters, a great characters, and some action. Rideback- This was looking like it was going to be a decent racing anime, which I would have found okay, that is until episode 4 happens and spoiler[our main character does something reckless/heroic to save her friend from terrorists and ends up getting on the bad side of corrupt totalitarian world government.] Random Note: All these series are from Madhouse. Coincidence? Probably not. Once I realized this I looked at my top rated titles (Masterpieces and Excellents) and Madhouse shows up way too often to be just coincidence. They're just that good. Now I try to just check all their shows out as a rule.

I'm going with Madoka too... dark shows are not my thing, and I'm indifferent to magicla girls. I only intended to watch the first episode or two... you know, to 'see what the fuss is about'. I think if I'd had the time, Id've watched the whole series in one sitting- and I never do that. Not 100% sure what you mean about 'that artwork'... if you mean the main look of the show/girls, then yep, they got us. It wasn't bad, but it certainly didn't speak of just kind of a show we were getting. If you mean the change-up when the girls entered the witch's worlds... well, I hope you don't mean that becuase I LOVED that. It was like anime characters walking out of their show and into a painting or scrapbook. I really hope this show gets liscensed, so I can force people to watch it.

My criteria for anime is pretty strict. I don't fall for mecha shows with a leading whiner, space operas featuring bounty hunters, or scribbling names in a notebook as criteria for a masterpiece.
This thread, however, meets one of those criteria, and that's when a series/OVA completely rips my expectations apart and moves me at the same time, my definition of "unexpected" for anime. Thus, only one series has the honor of winning my prestigious "Masterpiece" award and that's Aria. I'm sure people will find the rating hard to accept over a series with no drama, antagonists, or even a major plot, but for me, it's the lack of these criteria which made it unexpected. Season 3 of the series remains the best (out of 3), and to this day, I still shed tears when I see Alice sing. Absolutely... masterful. One of these days, I hope to label a second anime with this honor, but I've a feeling I'll be waiting a while. |

These days, girls with guns is just about the only type of seinen action anime we get these days. So if like me you prefer seinen action over shonen action, girls with guns is the only reasonably "popular" anime genre that gives that kind of action fix. |

I agree with Beck 100%.
I'm wasn't very fond of the art style and I watched the first episode in sub. I couldn't stand the crappy engrish, it was really embarrassing. Luckily I changed to Dub and rewatched. One of my favourite series of all time. Has so many spine tingly moments but my favorite bit is when Tanaka get dragged onto the stage to sing "Moon on the water" the bit when he breaks into the "I was sure, I couldn't let myself go" line it just worked for me and sounded the tits on the dub. I love the songs to death on that show, especially "Slip Out". |

Shiki. The character designs are hilarious to look at and give you an awful first impression. The first couple of episodes are slow as molasses, and the big plot twist is so obvious that ANN saw fit to spoil it in the series synopsis. But when the series gets good, it gets amazing. The final two hours of the series was basically non-stop blood-splattering action.
