Has anyone ever watched an anime with certain expectations and ended up completely shocked or surprised by how it all turned out overall? Was it a good or bad series? A series like Narutaru, for example, seemed to be very unsettling to many people.

Elfen Lied.
When I saw the picture of Myuu at animenfo.com it seemed like a generic show. Then all the way down it said "Only for people with strong stomach". ""It's uncut"". I was like WTF is this? I checked it out and it turned to be one of most brutal shows ever. They somehow menaged to mix cuteness with violence. I was wondering how that can even work but it somehow did. And it worked great.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
After I watched the first VHD movie I wasnt expecting much to nothing out of the second movie. I also think it goes without saying I didn't research alot about it so I didn't even see some screens. The first movie was OK but nothing special in my oppinion. And then came Bloodlust
I couldnt believe how beautiful the animation looked, how way cooler D has got and the AMAZING plot. I couldnt stop watching Bloodlust, bah, I still cant. Suddenly I got the greatest movie of all times when I was expecting a C-grade one.

Yea me too. I had Bloodlust on my HD for months without looking into it. I had bought first part and it sucked so had no expectation about the sequel. I was so wrong. I also think its one of finest anime MOVIES ever. Amazing peace of anime , indeed.

I would say the most shocking anime series I've seen yet would have to be Alien Nine. If I was prepared for what I was going to see, then maybe I wouldn't have been so surprised. I looked at the box art on the dvd case and thought it was going to be funny, weird, and cute. It was definitely weird, but it was hardly funny or cute. Alien Nine was also a much better series than I expected, although the feelings I had when I watched it through were depression and constant uneasiness.
After I watched the second episode, my expectations of the series changed dramatically when a certain event occurred that took me by surprise. I thought Alien Nine was a quirky, original, and enjoyable series, although I definitely had to get the manga series in order to be "complete."
From what I've heard, Shadow Star: Narutaru will probably top Alien Nine and other titles in terms of shocking or surprising. This is a series I am definitely looking forward to.

I'd have to say End of Evangelion. I hated Neon Genesis: Evangelion the first time through. A year later I rewatched the series and liked it, even the ending. At this point I had never gone far into the anime world. All I did was buy a series that I thought looked cool or had been recommended to me by a friend. After I watched NGE the second time through I went online and found a whole lot of sites devoted to NGE and they all mentioned EoE. I watched the movie the day that I received it in the mail. To this day I still have not watched it again. I was so shocked at the events of the movie. I never realized that the JSSDF would ever try to destroy NERV. Nor did I think they would do it so cruelly. Plus watching the 9 EVAs destroy Asuka the way they did. At first she was winning and I was so happy to see that she was in control of herself for the first time in like forever. Then the tide turns and she's brutally massacred. And Shinji...ho boy I never saw that coming. By the middle of the film I could see that the true "End" was coming. It was forshadowed a bit in the last two original episodes that bad things were happening during Shinji's self-examination, but I was so shocked at this movie. While the whole movie, for the most part, makes sense to me, I will really have to get up the nerve (pun intended ) to watch it again.

Gantz. I saw the same edited version that aired in Japan on On-demand. Then I got the dvds using Netflix and I was surprised at what they edited out. For example, some of the stuff that was on the 2nd episode in the edited version was in the 3rd episode in the uncut version.

haha, I don't know I’m sort of numb to mind blowing violence, it really didn't shock me. The cruelty of children though, that is what really got me haha!

For more cutesy violence, check out Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. Although, the tone of the show is much less serious. But how could anyone take columns of blood shooting out of peoples' heads seriously? I was rendered dumb after watching the first episode. On second thought, I was almost speechless just after watching the opening.

I'd have to go with Elfen Lied as well. Definitely the most graphically violent anime I've ever seen.
