Anime Boston is this weekend and I have saved up enough to buy a box set, but I don't know what to buy! After many nights of researching my "want to see" list I have come down to two titles.... Azumanga Daioh and RahXephon! What do you guys think is more worth it? Here is a link to my public list so you can get a feel for what I like. Thank you in advance!

From taking a look at your list and ratings, I have a feeling that RahXephon would fit into your tastes better. I noticed that several of your comments about anime you don't care for includes lack of plot. Azumanga Daioh more revolves around character and vingettes than a continuous plot, so it may turn you off. For you, I think RahXephon would be a better buy.

Just so you know I'm being completely objective, I'll go ahead and admit that I'm a bigger fan of Azumanga than I am of RahXephon, but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Personally, both series are good so you wouldn't be wasting money either way.

Hm.. that's a tough choice. I guess it depends on what you're in the mood for. I've seen all of both series and like them a lot.

If you're in the mood for a light hearted and laid back comedy, go with AzuDai. It's not particularly a "zany" show like Excel Saga, but the comedy is very subtle and character driven, as in you kind of have to understand them to realize just how funny they are.

It plays along the more "realistic" side of comedy, though with a few extra-ordinary elements every now and then (like flying cats or detachable pigtails). However, the chemistry between the characters is excellent and the overall atmosphere is very energetic. I would recommend this if you want some good laughs.

RahXephon on the other hand is an Excellent mecha drama. I'm tired of people comparing this to Evangelion even if they do share similar elements, but I'll tell you that I like this series better than Eva.

Along with smooth character designs, a cast of characters that isn't so self-centered, and even a nice subtle romance hidden within the plot itself, I think you'll like RahXephon if you're looking for a good science fiction/mecha show to watch.

NO it isn't, Fafner is the best of the three. It is this order: Fafenr, Eva, the RahXephon. The main reason is that the last few episodes of RahXephon seemed rushed.

Actually, I'd buy Rahxephon for one reason: ADV has been having a lot of sales lately on their website. A few weeks ago, AzuDai discs were going for $8 or so. Even places like FYE, etc, are are selling it for $12/ea. You'd save money just by buying the discs individually.

On the other hand, I haven't seen Rahx go down in price any anywhere... so you may as well just buy that at the con.

I have to go with RahXephon. I think AzuDai has higher re-watch value so you'll probably get more use out of it in the long run (I know I have. It's like the comfort food of the anime world), but it doesn't have the kind of immediate impact, the "wow!" effect, that RX does. But frankly they're both really excellent shows so regardless of which you choose you should be quite happy with your purchase.

I've only watched the first episode of RahXephon, so I can't really give you a good opinion of the series as a whole. I own the entire Azumanga Daioh series and have watched nearly all the episodes. I decided to pick up this series because of positive reviews and from watching the enjoyable first episode on a sampler dvd. I thought the series was very funny and had excellent, memorable characters. This series has pretty much no continuing storyline besides the fact that the characters are going through different seasons and moving up in grade level. It's the type of series that is very easy to get into and doesn't require much thinking involved. You could probably turn off your brain and still understand what's going on. Azumanga Daioh , as of now, is one of my top 5 favorite anime. I think you should probably get this series to add variety in your anime collection or just because it is an excellent anime in my opinion that is very easy to get into and enjoy. If you want an anime that is serious and has a continuing storyline and a plot, you should probably get RahXephon instead.

I looked on ADV and FYE and I didn't see any such prices, Crying or Very sad you got me excited.

NEVER expect FYE to lower their prices. They're one of the worst places to get anime in that the anime that they sell is priced either AT or ABOVE MSRP 99% of the time (though I did get Armitage III: Polymatrix from them for $15 a few years ago).

As for what to go for, I'd go Rahxephon. As someone else said, from what you've posted, your tastes seem to lean away from episodic stories, and Azumanga is definately episodic (though very funny and very well written), whereas Rahxephon is quite detailed and complex and quite the linear story, with a solid plot throughout the series.

EoE really sucks. All the movies did.

Regardless of plot-content, they are still nicely directed, beautifully animated pieces which look and sound magnificent. I thought the director did very well considering the type of material he had to work with.

"Never" is quite a strong word. Wink You just have to chance by their store when they're marking stuff down. Normally, I *loathe* FYE, but I damn near shat myself when I say AzuDai for $12/each at my local store.

As for ADV sales, wait for them. They only have sales like, every two weeks or so, and they only last for a few days at a time. Keep checking back over the weekends.
