Anime is an expensive habit and just like my girlfriend i dont mind spending money on it but i also dont want to overspend. So this brings me to the topic are volume 1 box sets worth it? they retail at about $10 more if your lucky but what if you dont like the series? are those cwaptacular shirts and box worth that much more? a silly little poster? complete box sets are worth it but should we shell out that extra money for an art box and a worthless extra (samurai champloo bandana)?

It'll be different for each individual. Personally, I'm a "collector", so I like any little extra shiny-bit they give me. I personally think the ultra-LE boxsets like .hack/KG/Boogiepop/Escaflowne and the like are great fun. Even if I don't care for the series enough to finish it the extra junk is still a proud part of my "collection".

As far as I see it, some are and some aren't. I liked the Samurai Champloo set, the box is nice and though I don't wear bandanna's it works fine hanging on my wall. Although, like Dilandau, I tend to be a collector as well and like having other extra's around representing my collection. There are some that are a bit iffy, such as the FMP:FUMOFFU box which was cheaper than most, granted, but the extra was nothing more than a DVD insert.

I generally don't bother with the box set unless I can get a very good price, or if it's one of my very favourite series. I did make a special exception for Najica Blitz Tactics though Embarassed

NOOOOOOOOOOO.....there was a game board with the FMP:Fumoffu box. Haha... but the box was pretty nice on its own and I got it for about $26 so, It was a bargain for me.

Hehe, I know there was, but the game board was really just an insert in the DVD, nothing they couldn't have just packaged with it anyways. The box is nice though, and it was generally inexpensive at least. The boxes themselves are almost worth it though, I have some series I've bought without boxes that I wish I could go back and buy just a box for 'em.

Well, that all depends on which title and how much you're paying for it. I thought my Witch Hunter Robin LE v. 1 was worth the 26USD. If it includes a sountrack, I'd get it. The artbox is more for the collectors, so I guess it wouldn't be worth spending extra on an extra that you can't use. What would I do with a huge T-shirt anyway?

I usually make it a policy to get them, as long as they're not extremely expensive due to toys, CDs, fancy boxes, etc. (such as Wolf's Rain and FMA). In general, they look better on the shelves and help keep things organized. For a series like ROD TV, it's definitely better to get the Vol 1 limited edition book-type box for $45, since it's a much more distinctive box than the Vol 7 box for $50, plus you get 4 episodes instead of 3 with volume 1. Please Twins is pretty cheap, and you get a CD with it. It all depends on what you think of a series in the first place.

My thing with anime is that the DVD boxed sets are, generally speaking, neither cheaper nor smaller. But then, I only collect series where I know I'm going to want to get the whole thing, so I when there is a boxy thing I'll go ahead and get it.

On the other hand, we're still making out a *lot* better than our Japanese counterparts. The Japanese DVDs of Burst Angel (for example) cost 6300 yen (about $60) each and have only two episodes. o.O

I wonder if the people just have a higher salary average there?A lot of things seem to be more expensive, that's all.

It depends. What I do usually is get the box if it's a newer series that I really want to check out and don't feel like waiting a year or two for a collection. I rather prefer a nice box to a bunch of random volumes on my shelves. If the series I want to check out has no box or if it's out of print then I put that series on a list and keep an eye out for a collection. Ideally I like to purchase collections and box sets rather than collecting each volume as it's released, as they usually save you money and can then be marithoned. Smile

I'm really stoked about the Infinite Ryvius box set coming out this month. It has an excellent retail price of less than $45.00 (41.99 on amazon).

Most people pay for boxes because they're collector and want something to hold all the volumes together in one nice looking package.

And people buy volume 1 + Box because they get to see the anime first and over a short period of time. It takes a year or more for a boxset to release, so most people prefer to buy boxset because it's cheaper, but they have to wait.

Yes. Their estimated GDP for 2004 was about $3.745 trillion (that's U.S dollars), 5th top in the world, while the U.S was number 2 with an estimated $11.75 trillion. And keep in mind that the U.S has about 168 million more people than Japan.

You're misinterpreting the table if it's the data from the CIA. They put the world total at number 1, and have a combined entry for the European Union at number 3, which is bizarre to say the least. That makes the US really the 1st, and Japan 3rd. In practice, however, raw GDP and GDP per capita sometimes have little bearing on the income of individual citizens. GNI per capita is a better measure, and shows the US slightly ahead of Japan at just under $40,000 per person per year.
