This thread is for discussing your opinion of one of the most talked
about anime series in the world. As for my opinion, the series
has gotten progressively better with each release; starting off
abysmaly with the perverted first episode, then gradually working
up to what may have been the best anime film of 2011.
So, to agree or disagree, that is the question for you to answer.

A pretty good story wrapped up in excruciatingly annoying characters and Otaku pandering. Haruhi herself is the worst part of her own god-damn franchise. And Mikuru and Yuki? Oh boy, don't get me started.
I planned to watch the film these holidays but never got round to it. After Endless Eight, I think I can be excused for being dubious about the merits of a movie of the same pedigree and which is apparently bloated. Two and-a-half hours of these characters? Sounds like hell.

So, with that your implying that you thought that the second season, which has 8 episodes that are almost identical, was better than the first? Gotta agree that the film was very well done, though it was probably a little long and I found the resemblance to K-on (in terms of the art) kinda distracting at times.
The first season was a reasonably interesting watch, but im still somewhat at a loss as to why the series gained the popularity it did. I mean, its good and I liked it, but t wasn't really 'that good'.

I think the fame and acclaim it has earned kinda does make it 'that good' but that doesn't mean you have to like it 'that much'.

Not you, I meant the OP. I started composing my message before yours went up. Didn't worry about adding in an OP quote because I had thought it would be more or less obvious, apparently not though.

True, but im still going to stick with my original statement that it didn't seem 'that good'. By which i mean that I cant find anything in particular that makes it a shining example of a quality anime that is worthy of the 'that good' label. It seems to me that if an anime got the 'fame and acclaim' that the series has these days, the forum posts about it would be over-run with people claiming its 'over-rated' or 'over-hyped', as opposed to praising it.

@Ringking
I don't really think that having eight nearly identical episode was
really that bad, actually. I found it quite enjoyable, just rewatched
them today; while playing games on my cellphone lol.
As for the overall success of the series, sorry dtm42, but I think
it's because of the absolutely lovable characters; after all, I fell
in love with this series because of Haruhi, began thoroughly
engrossed with Yuki Nagato's scenes, and envy Kyon's great sense of humor. I'm certainly not the only one.
Edit: I do, however, prefer the first season to the second season;
I'm just glad that the series has lost it's original perversion; that
stuff was too much.

Your a more patient person than me then . I tried to endure it but I couldn't do more than four episodes of the same thing. But them, im more about the narrative than I am about the characters,so thats most likely the difference here.

Who says the a top quality product should be the most popular? There was nothing functionally wrong with it that would prevent it's success.

My opinion? A fantastic first novel/6 episodes that has been milked into the ground now.

I think it's a clever, inventive series with a good sense of humor about itself. I do get little headaches trying to follow all the time travel stuff, but otherwise it's got a good narrative.
Haruhi is the sort of character that, if you'd met in real life, you'd probably hate, but for some reason as an anime character she's actually pretty charming.

Yeah, call me weird if you like, but I was completely engrossed by
noticing the changes in clothing and the new, but brief, scenes later
on. Also, I found it to be a relaxing change of pace from all the
angsty, dark anime I've been watching. Still, I must admit that I
started groaning a couple of times.

Not saying it had to be, I agree with you that popularity does not necessarily equal quality and vice versa. When I said quality I wasn't referring to technical or composition quality, but overall effect quality. Im not into analyzing every element of a show, for me its a simple question: of 'did you enjoy this anime (yes/no)', but I meant that in terms of possessing elements that makes a show really popular, nothing in particular about it stood out to me.
Chances are this is just me, I dont get the popularity of titles like K-On and Elfen Lied either....

At a first shallow look it is meant to look like an awefull movie made by teenages: we have bad music, acting, camera work, lighting, doing all of this could have presented their own problems in actually making. It is later that you find the confusing characters and plot is meant to be ironicly thought back; Mikuru is incredibly shy, Itsuki is always acting (thus making him acting that he is acting in this) and Yuki looks like she does little other than read books and will do what others want. We also have insight into Haruhi's mind, and Kyon's cynisism to her work. There is also clues in it of things not being normal.
