I am pondering buying an australian edition of a DVD. I am just wondering, the price was very good, do i risk getting a bootleg when ordering region 4 imports?

Thank you.

As far as I know, you shouldn't be getting a bootleg.

Speaking of Australian anime DVDs, who else is distributing anime Down Under other than Madman Entertainment?

The stores information about the discs say that Madman is distributer. So i guess that makes it pretty much safe then? About 19$ a disc for the berserk series. That has to be a good price, right?

Sounds about right, since an R1 version goes for $22.99 at Best Buy.

the problem is you need a region free dvd player to play australian dvd's (R4 encoded). plus, they are PAL encoded, so your tv needs to handle that too

A company known as Siren also distribute down here, but thier products are rather poor (currently have Soul Taker, Here and now there and he or whatever, Vandread, and Jin Roh). Normally the Madman DVDs are very good, with exception of the Transformrs movie. All in all, it's worth it if you have region free DVD and can support PAL. However, if you're a videophile, it might not be for you as several titles are converted into PAL from NTSC sources. But, this is unnoticable if you don't know nor care.

www.fbo.com.au do some good deals. check them out

You wouldn't happen to have the URL to Siren's website?

EDIT: I did a search online, and now I'm confused as hell. It looks like Manga, Madman and Siren are one and the same in Australia and New Zealand.

My dvdplayer is region free. Pal isn't a problem as i live in europe where pal is standard. I buy alot of R1 releases too though, but the DVD can convert from ntsc to pal by itself so it doesn't matter. (The conversion makes three lines appear at the top. But you can live with that. Though i plan on getting a tv that supports ntsc, so that the dvd doesn't have to use it's converter, when i fly out of the nest.)

Anyway, i think i will postpone buying Berserk, as Ah! my goddess the movie and Hyperpolice feels closer to the heart right now.

I highly recommend Madman Anime smile Their DVD's are often slightly better than the R1 versions, most notably with End of Evangelion.

Aaaah. Nice.
How about a distributor called 'AV Channel'? They seem to distribute Ah! my goddess in australia.

Edit: Allthough there is nine minutes difference in leangth between the R1 and R4 release. Does that mean that it has been cut? I know the convertion from ntsc makes a movie go slightly faster, but is it really that much?

AV Channel distribute all of madmans titles, as wlel as other interests such as Middle-eastern and gay interest Videos and DVDs. madman simply encode and liscence the DVDs and then they are released through AV channel. Manga Distribute heir own titles if I'm correct, but madman author the DVDs and stuff.

As far as I know, it's not cut. Basically the same as the R1 version only slightlyfaster I think, but not even that. Sometimes the listed movie times are just quick geusstimates. I remember Spriggan being like 90 minutes, and it churned its stupid ass out at 80. Boy that movie was pathetic at the end

I hate spriggan

Done!

From what I've heard, they work on mostly non-anime things, and are related to Madman.

I've got both R1 and R4 copies of some discs, and have never noticed anything cut. The longer the movie, the greater the difference will be.

Hum, i checked some more r1 retailers. and 115 minutes seem to be a blatant error. Other sites said 107 (Same as R4) minutes for the same movie, same UPC and everything.

Thank you very much for all your help everyone.

That is correct.. the AV channel is closly related to madman. as someone mentioned earlier, they distribute all of madman's releases.

but personally, I wouldn't advise buying the DVD's from the madman website. they sell them at the same prices as in the normal stores.

if you can find a site that sells them cheaper, then you should be doing alright..
personaly.. the video store down the road get's them for me, and he charges me slighly more than he pays for them Very Happy
