I've just heard from Scott Houle of Coastal Studios that the much-loved dubbing studio is calling it quits due to lack of work. For those unfamiliar with their work, here's a short sampling of their dubs:
-- You're Under Arrest!
-- Oh My Goddess!
-- Elf Princess Raine
-- Shinesman
-- Virtua Fighter TV
Never seen Virtua Fighter, but all the other dubs were great. Coastal had a knack for adding extra humor to comedic dialogue and doing it so well that only the most purist fans ever complained.
But in the end, they lacked a "dancing partner", i.e. an anime company that threw most of its work their way. The only such partner they ever had was AnimEigo, who has now moved dub production in-house.
This is literally depressing me, to see a studio like Coastal go under while other studios (who shall remain nameless) thrive by rushing mediocre crap out the door.
So here's to Coastal, a studio that died before its time. I can only hope that other studios will aspire to the level of quality they embodied.

I've heard that they charged more and took more time than other dub houses. I've only heard a little of their work, so I can't comment, but nowadays, when dubs like FLCL and His & Her Circumstances take a while for best results, it would be Coastal's time. Too bad, but perhaps all the talents involved will be able to go elsewhere and keep working.

Scott Houle claimed they charged less, but I have no personal knowledge one way or the other. I think these days anime companies prefer to either dub in-house or form tight working partnerships with dubbing houses in the same geographic region. That always left Coastal (in North Carolina) at a disadvantage.
As for the charge of being slow, the understanding I'm getting is that it was always more AnimEigo's fault than it was theirs. I don't think their non-AnimEigo work suffered from any delays.

Oh. North Carolina, where I've spent a good bit of time with relatives who live out that way, isn't exactly a major entertainment industry center. Yeah, that would explain a lot.

And perhaps push their influence while they're at it.
I've never heard of the company, but I'm deffinatly familiar with their work. Elf Princess Rain and Shinesman are perhaps two of the funniest dubs you'll ever hear (and I'm sure we've all ateast heard a little of AMG). Grade A work.

Actually, Wilmington does quite a bit of stuff. (Which is where AnimEigo is...and I believe Coastal was there too.) It's one of their largest sources of income for the city.

Yes... Quite a number of TV shows and films shoot there. Dawson's Creek and American Gothic come to mind, and I believe both had guest appearances by actors who'd been in Coastal's dubs. Coastal actually had a decent source of additional income from providing audio post production services to the entertainment industry, but I guess it wasn't enough.
As for Coastal closing, it's a pity, but I can't say I've heard more then one dub they've worked on. IIRC, they were actually in danger of closing in 1998 too, after AnimEigo got out of anime for a while. Media Blasters ended up saving them, but only for a while it seems.

Well, it's sad, of course... but... AnimEigo is such a small company compared to most of the others. I'm surprised Coastal was able to last this long with AnimEigo as their primary partner. Yet... their dubs are consistently better than 90% of what I've heard from the big guys. I presume the important members of the You're Under Arrest dub cast will still be used by other studios when they're needed.
