I'm extremely excited for this to be happening. I've read here and in NewType how wonderful it is. Americans have this obcession with wolves and packs. No wonder we're all itching to see this anime! |

That would probably be why they announced the license now. All those people who watched it so far, dying to see what happens.....all buying the DVDs now just to see the ending. |

Yes... but I'm really, really hoping now that the eps of 15-18 are umm... eradicated? Or on a "bonus" disk?
or something... O_O |

Oooh, "bonus disk" for 15-18 is a great idea. I haven't watched the series since they started with the recaps, but I hear many people were very unhappy about them. I can't wait to see how the DVD releases look!

I just hope they don't realease it with two episodes per disc as in Japan.
I am glad though. I stopped watching before the recaps as to not spoil the DVD experience. |

Nope... U.S. release has a better standard of giving you more eps per disk. Who knows, they may even decide to span it aross 5 DVD's... ^_^

awesome story concept, a nice twist on the old "cloaking" idea. Enjoyed the first episode and must see much more.

i can understand everyone's excitement about wolf's rain cause i've seen all 22 episodes of it out there in fansubs and now that it's licensed, i'm greatly saddened
i just hope that people could create some legal system in which the fansubs and licensing could coexist peacefully and neatly. i'm very green in all of this stuff, so pardon if any of my suggestions seem ridiculous. my naive little fantasy: couldn't fansubbing sites allow individual users to login (with a username and password so the user has an official identity and tag) and download, and then track users after the licensing, if the users continue to download the licensed anime? this wouldn't be an intrusion on people's privacy if by registering as a member of the fansub website, people agree to terms that state the requirement of the tracking under certain conditions. then, the fansubbers, by tracking those users who continue to download, send them an email or letter that explains the legality issues and binds the user with a contract that says "if u want to continue downloading these fansubs, you must agree to buy the dvd." if the user agrees to the contract, they can continue downloading. in order to enforce this contract, the user should be then required to, when the dvd is available, to buy it and send some proof of the purchase (i dunno wut this could be...a receipt??? a confirmation email from the dvd seller???) to the fansubbers. of course, the fansubbers would have to set a deadline for the proof of buying the dvd, or some other consequence for maliciously not buying the dvd/vcd (like being revealed or whatnot, similar to how legal consequences fall on individual p2p client users now, as it was being explained in the tech magazine wired). at the end of all this, the fansubbers would happily go on with their duties as fansubbers without strange interruptions to their "train of thought", and the companies with the licenses are guaranteed that the fansubbing can only encourage profit, and not otherwise. or if this interpretation of the problem is wrong, what is the "true" purpose of fansubbing? if someone had written a legal mission statement for fansubbing that was approved by "big guys" that have authority in the industry, then these legal problems wouldn't be as rife as they are now...right? someone versed in these subjects, please explain if u have time i would appreciate it a lot ps wolf's rain is a beauty--i'm realli a picky viewer, and this one realli has me hooked...and i cant find dvds for it except imports that u have to buy in yen |

I've seen up to episode 21 that Live-eviL subbed, and it truly is a great series. The only policing of fansub groups are done by companies such as Bandai, Urban Vision, FUNimation, etc. Animesuki, a BitTorrent site, does make sure that it doesn't host links for downloading licsensed anime. Besides that, its basically up to the Fansub group itself to set its own standards. Live-eviL and Toriyama's World, two of the better groups out there do stop distribution when a title is liscensed.

Never gonna happen. Even if a program like that was put in place, it wouldn't work. What, exactly, is the fansubber supposed to do when a thousand people (or MORE) who downloaded from them fail to send proof of a DVD purchase? Because people are lazy, and some simply have no respect for copyright law whatsoever. Very few people would ever go to that much trouble just to validate their shady viewing habits. But that's almost irrelevant, because I don't think protocol like that could ever be adopted on any kind of widespread basis. A few groups might be willing to try it - as their own effort to validate their hobby - but I don't see it ever becoming standard practice; something that might become part of the Fansubber Ethical Code in the future. The thing is - and a lot of people somehow fail to acknowledge the gravity of this point, the authors of "The New Code" included - fansubbing is not an "industry" in the traditional sense, and as such fansubbers are not required to follow any kind of laws at all. They don't have to obey laws, report to higher authorities... They don't even have to follow the basic economic laws that your high school social studies professor told you that *everyone* uses. (Especially in the case of digisubbers, which apparently make up the bulk of the "industry" today.) They can *choose* to follow rules, but that's completely up to them. Telling them how to do what they do is futile. Unless they are genuinely un- or misinformed (which it is difficult to be, with the amount of press fansubs have gotten recently) they're already going to know that their hobby is illegal, and they're not going to care that you don't like it. So, basically, they think like you. They're doing what they feel like doing, and are restrained mainly by their own conscience and beliefs. So (setting the practicality of the program COMPLETELY aside)... Would YOU run a program, and use your own time and resources to have other fans send you UPCs and confirm that they're not using your labor of love to soullessly leach off of the anime industry? I didn't think so. |

Ahh, the good old days. I was just a little kid when this was licensed, and I remember what a big deal it was. Nice trip down memory lane ^^
