I didn't realize ANN was able to sneak in an interview with Eiko Tanaka there at the Berserk screening. I was there at the movie premiere panel/screening, and the crowd was really nice and really cheered her on for coming all the way over to introduce the movie to everyone. There was even some dude in Guts cosplay who escorted her in. Very Happy

Just a clarification, but Mind Game is also based on a comic by Robin Nishi (who also appears in the movie).

Thanks for the interview ANN/Zac.

Two points that kind of stand out for me. First, is that Eiko isn't oblivious to the.. let's say "mixed results" that they got with the heavy usage of 3-D/CG animation in the Berserk films. In her own words, "I am afraid that there are some parts which we could have done better." But she's still plenty proud of her animation studio, as she damn well deserves to be. Studio 4c is still a pretty rocking place. Some of her other comments kind of lead me to believe that they were working with a lean budget. But of course, we'll never know for sure!

My other interesting take away, which is also money related, was her comment about the "(excessive) Yen appreciation" being among the unfortunate changes we've seen in the industry in recent years. You might wonder how that could possibly be a bad thing for a Japanese company that often does business with US clients. Well it's possible that even if they're not charging anymore now then they have in the past, due to the poor exchange rate, they may now be out of the price range of many of the US clients they've done work for in the past, which ultimately means less business for their company.

I think the main problem wasn't the swords etc. it was getting basic plot points right, which for the most part went out the window a long time ago. Timing being another problem, which even if resolved now doesn't make a difference because, you know a lot of major plot points are gone.
