i heard no publisher wanted to publish SAO That wasn't a smart business decision. Some of the people need to be fire.

No, Reki Kawahara seems to have never tried to get it properly published until he won the 2008 Dengeki Novel Prize with Accel World. At which point the editors he'd acquired with the deal to publish Accel World pretty readily agreed.
