I agree with this review volume 45 really is one of if not the weakest volumes, however the case in it are still not bad. I can understand what the reviewer is saying about the first case a bit but I still think that it is not convoluted like he is saying, wordy sure but not convoluted. the next case is to mellow, and then you get the baseball case which normally wouldn't really be a stand out. and then you get the next case which I would say delivers, however it falls victim to not having enough chapters in the volume.
I would say that giving it a D for story is really harsh and while the art is not stupendous it does a good job and has an old fashioned style that we don't we in anime and manga that much anymore so marking it down so much because of that is harsh. even on it's worse day this manga is still above average (C+/B-) because the cases are still done well enough that it is above most mystery series in terms of it's cases.
My major problem with Conan has always been that it doesn't slow down enough at times and really develop one case all the way through the whydunit. to be fair though it does a very good job with the whodunit and howdunits especially when it singles one of them out as it commonly does for howdunit cases such as the baseball case.

I would likely agree with your criticism if it wasn't for my reading not being through the Case Closed VIZ releases, so I tend to read till the end of some/a dozen cases of Conan and sit out of the manga for a while and repeat.
>_>
Judging from what you said, it isn't safe to return to the VIZ manga releases yet, given that they still follow FUNimation's naming conventions partly. I wish they would get out of that habit of sticking with poor localisations just because, even One Piece still has Zolo right?
