Hi guys,
What is your opinion of characters with superpowers, magical abilities, insane strength? etc. Personally I'm quite ambivalent myself. I'd rather see an average character struggle in combat then have him/her defeat a super powerful evil baddy with an unstoppable, super powerful attack. When it gets to the point that a character achieves demi-god like powers I find I quickly lose interest in a series. Just my opinion. What are you thoughts? |

Interestingly the series that pops into my head when I read this post is Medaka Box, for how it played with this for me. At first I had little interest in the title character due to the fact she was just so overpowered. But the series really messed with this, like the difference between the abnormals and the normals, especially in the second season, which ended up kind of changing my mind on thinking a character becomes automatically boreing when they are so powerful enemies can be mere ants.
it may take a bit of patience if you are not really into that whole shounen logic but there about what makes a superpowered character (human or villain). Along the lines that what could make a character interesting beyond whether they can do the imposible is their own character, both a weakness or a greatest strength. A story can bend to what wims they have. I have had simiar thoughts from a recent anime that just finished called Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?, the main character character is clearly overpowered but it did not seem to diminish the story too much. The reason was probably that it became a case that everthing seemed to follow his whims, including to leave situations up his strong, but also challenged friends. And the last series I will bring up is an interesting take on this in the To Aru series. Particulary in that the series is filled with super powered people, and ironically the fights go down to the hero fighting as a normal person beating his opponents with his fists useing normal powered strength. It gets ironic by the fact that how he does it is that his hand can dispel other powers, arguably the most super thing in the show. I kind of feel that it gets a bit boring becaus in most cases it is the same deal of good guy punches the enemy in the face to win. The Espers have a particular take on the super powered thing as the struggle between the people with them, and without them is a rather major issue. While the title character of the spinoff is one of the more awesome parts pf tje series, the unpowered member turned out to be a rather cool member in her own right. I hope some of this can make sense. |

If it fits the universe created and established by the story then I have no problem with it. If it doesn't, then I probably would take issue with it.

As much as I liked shonen shows as a kid, i did a whole 180 and hate unrealistic anime these days (with the exception of mech shows like gundam and eva). Over-Powered main characters that I liked in the past are laughable to me these days...so yeah, I started to prefer realistic settings and characters better as I grew older
