Okay, I need a Tenchi Muyo fan to try to set up a timeline on what to watch in order for the Tenchi Muyo Series. I think I like this anime, just saw Dual and GxP so I figured I would like to give the rest of the series a twirl. Thanks for the help in advance.

Tenchi Muyo is a Slice of life anime, it does a few breif instances of fighting (only one scene I would consider an actual battle). Im not sure what your asking by timeline but Ill go ahead and asume you mean series you should watch before you watch Tenchi Muyo.
I would go with "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya". Thats really the only one I liked. For an alternate retelling of tenchi muyo, theres tenchi universe. Which has them going around in space. (they begin the episodes on earth.) To get more info look it up on the encyclopedia located on the left, under anime.

Thanks for the help in advance. | The very first Tenchi Muyo series that started it all was the Ryo-Ohki OVA 1, and 2.
The TV Universe series came after but the story is a completely different universe and in no way related to the OVAs. Then later still was Tenchi in Tokyo. Yet another TV series but again a different universe. Then there were the three movies Tenchi Muyo in Love, TV universed based. Then "Daughter of Darkness", a stand-alone. Then "Tenchi Muyo in Love 2", or Tenchi Forever, allegedly the final installment of the first TV universe.
GXP is OVA based but happens 3 years in story line after the the beginning of the third OVA story which picks up 2 years after episode 13A of the second OVA. Confusing I know but that is what Mr. Kajishima wanted to do.
I hope this is useful.

Regarding your question,
you would be best to watch the original "Tenchi muyo ova", this consists of thirteen episodes and is the starting point for all the following series spin offs and movies.
I would suggest you watch "Tenchi universe" next for the purpose of following the timeline as such, although remember that this is an alternative telling of the Ova's and apart from the characters do not share any story traits.
The next release would be "Tenchi in Tokyo" adding some new characters, and a change in location for the assembled cast.
Finally for a direct sequel, or continuation of the OVA's Funimation has released "Tenchi muyo ryo ohki" which are quite good although not as good as the originals in my opinion, due to some poor dialogue and dubbing issues.
There have been a few movies released, which again offer indavidual stories rather than continuations to the series.
To the best of my knowledge that is how the story goes.
Hope that helped somewhat.

Okay, I understand now. I would like to thank you all for the responses and it is also good to know that this was a slice of life anime also. Thanks for the heads up on the time table of the story arcs , etc also.

As a counter-point to Mikaal (and I'm sure the old regulars around here are surprised it took me this long to get into a Tenchi discussion), the 3rd OAV is NOT inferior in any way to the first two.
Its animation is breath-taking, and Kajishima's tiny updates to the character designs are perfect evidence of the fact that time has marched on in Okayama. Most of all, the combination of the 3rd OAV and GXP give an incredible vision of the universe of the franchise.
The dub issues are simply that; dub issues. Mona Marshall is a poor cast as a replacement for Petrea Burchard (sorry Funi, but Ryoko is a rarity in anime - A full-grown WOMAN, and thus requires a womanly voice, and Mona Marshall's tomboy voice is woefully underqualified) and those of us who watched Tenchi in Tokyo or the Tenchi Forever know how bad Rebecca Forstadt's voice is.
Where oh where is Ellen Gerstell these days, anyways?
But, it's a solid release, and it's a great expansion (and compelling continuation) of Masaki Kajishima's original vision, and the new (CORRECT!) characters are amazing additions to the cast. Tennyo alone is well worth the price of admission!
