Now that I have a few ONAs (original net animation) under my belt, I'm gonna ask the question. Should ONAs be considered anime? I know this goes back to actually defining anime again. Since some people see it as "animation intended for the Japanese audience"...would an ONA fall under that? Is it anime just because it's Japanese language? It's rather difficult to aim something on the internet at a specific country. (Unless you're going to charge for it and not accept certain payment types from certain countries.)
What do you guys think?

Well, the internet is just another portal for entertainment, not really any different from a VCR or a movie theater. As long as they follow all of the other "rules" I don't see why they would be seen as anything else. If we call an ONA done in the US a cartoon then why not call an ONA done is Japan an anime?

Well...see...if it's a movie theater, you can only have a movie theater in a specific place. The net isn't a *place*....I can say "Hey, I'm going to that AMC in Philly" but I can't say "I'm going to that website in Japan...well, at least I THINK it's Japan but it could really be China or Korea or something."
That's the point....how do we know that an ONA was done in the US or in Japan or where it was done? We could look at the "Japanese looking" names....but is that really showing where the person is from anyway?

We'd just have to take their word on it. Sure people can lie, I could do an ONA and say I live in Tokyo, but I don't. However if I did live in Japan would that make my project less of an anime just because other people could be lying?

It wouldn't make *your* project less of an anime, but if we are going to make a determination between Japanese anime and anime (all animation), there would have to be a way to determine if an ONA gets classified as anime.
It's like how we determine between Transformers anime and Transformers cartoon. (Using the word cartoon to mean American animation) Except we can see that the Transformers anime was aimed at a Japanese audience and created by Japanese. How can we validate that the animation released on the net is, indeed, anime?

Where does one go to see ONA's? Are there sites dedicated to this in general?

I don't know of any sites that specifically list ONAs. There are some listed in the Encyclopedia...

I don't think we need to validate it as anime as much as we would have to validate it as Japanese. just like we have sites for english net animation, Newgrounds for example, I'm sure there are japanese equivilents made by and geared for the Japanese. It's really just a matter of sorting out the shows series by series just like we would for any other type of animation. Unfortunatly there is no cut and dry way of knowing, it would require investigating and having some faith in the people doing them.
Ok, so there isn't a real solid location for the internet, there is a solid location for where the animation is being made. The rules aren't going to be exactly the same, I'm sure there's people in Japan making ONAs in English and people in the US making ONAs in Japanese, but when you deal with different delivery systems you need to do things a bit differently.

What does it matter where the ONA was made? If you can't tell if it was made in Japan or America OR if you are certan it was made in japan and it was not, isn't that a good thing? If you're looking for a good show to watch that has a japanese influence, does it neccesarily have to come directly from Japan? Would it really be all that different if the creator is so much of an anime fan that they had the motivation to create an ONA?
It isn't all that different with anime or manga either. If someone creates an anime or manga, that was done so well that you would not be able to distinguish it from a Japanese product were it not for the label, would you reject it?
Would you say to yourself "I thought it would be good but then I found out it wasn't really Japanese, so I don't think it's so great"?
These are questions that I ask you think about and ask yourself.

I never said that. I watch all sorts of shows....where it comes from doesn't matter. However, this site in particular is about anime....which pretty much means Japanese animation. (I believe there are a few Korean titles in the encyclopedia or something...) You wouldn't see a French title or an American title in the encyclopedia. (Hence why stuff like Teen Titans isn't there.) THAT is why it matters where it comes from...so far, it's how anime has been defined.

Well, super milk-chan was flash animation but I'd consider it anime, even ADV licensed it.

i suppose genres are getting more and more mixed and hybird genres are born, the border between western culture and eastern culture are already fading and now, we can see some animes drawing styles a bit more westernised. so there would be much of a difference between a lot of the animes and western cartoons. animes do have 'rules' tha are followed and i think that its up to the person to deceide whether ONAs are anime or not, like certain music where you just cant group it into a certain genre.
but why not treat ONAs as a totally different genre altogether?
