I have no problem with people calling manga "comics". Technically, that's what they are. I consider "manga" to be a different type of comic compared to, say, american comics.

As to the different age rating, well I think manga can get away with a lot more stuff that wouldn't be shown on tv. Take X for example. A lot more... bloody stuff and yaoi licky stuff on Fuma's part in the manga. All that severed head stuff couldn't get on tv either >.>

Another thing would be to make it clear to parents that these "comics" are not for kids.

I call them either comics or manga since they mean the same thing. Also I don't like it when people get on my case should I pronounce 'manga' wrong, when I have pronunciation problems even with the English language (despite the fact I clearly understand my language).

Yep, not to mention the fact that in the Graphic novel area in bookstores often carry 60's and 70's 'Underground' comics, and even violent comics from the major American comic companies. So parents usually might label this area a no-no to their kids, no matter how much their kids wants to get a certain manga of their favorite anime.

Manga are comics, so I don't really have a problem with it. Likewise anime are cartoons, so I don't have a problem when people call them that. I do have a problem with the 'anime = porn' people, though....

I agree with ya, Most of my mates call manga comics and i don't like it.Comics are american drawings containg words like 'POW','BIFF','BAMM" and "MINT".Manga's are completely different in some aspects such as the drawing style and the atmosphere.

I have this thing with interchanging words that mean the same thing, so I just switch saying manga and comics at will, or without will... Just randomly.

Yeah, manga and comics are interchangeable in my mind. It's kinda like saying anime or cartoon. I suppose it's just what you're used to. I tend to switch between manga and graphic novel, but graphic novel is really long. So, I usually just say manga. I would be more annoyed if people called manga-anime or vice versa.Wink

You obviously need to read more manga..

You'll see plenty of "Shiiin" "Gata gata" "Buru Buru" and so forth in manga. All of those sound effects are -exactly- the same as having English words like "pow" "biff", etc.

The only difference is that you don't understand them because they're in Japanese.

No reason to argue about this, because manga is just japanese for comics.

Well, I see this debate isn't gonna end anytime soon. The main issue i think, is to see what the japanese want it to be called.

Somehow I seriously doubt the Japanese could care less what we call manga.

Anyway, I'm with just about everyone else that's posted here; I don't care if people call them manga or comics, since both terms are synonymous.

The japanese actually use the word for comic "komikku" than manga. For example, "Shonen Sunday Comics", "Jump Comics", "Young King Comics", or "Shonen Magazine Comics" are written in the top corners of mangas.

You don't care if you call American cartoons comics or "American animation," do you? Manga, comics; po-tay-to, po-tah-to. I think I know why it bugs some people. The general thought entering your brain when you hear "comics" is likely something akin to Sunday morning comic strips: fairly nonsensical, mildly entertaining, simple animation. The general image of manga is much higher quality animation, a deeper storyline, etc. Of course, there are many exceptions. For instance, I think Dilbert is funnier than Love Hina on any given day. So is it manga, or comics? Be PC, and call them graphic novels for all I care. Remember, people aren't trying to belittle our beloved Berserk; they just don't understand.
