Do you ever notice those "counterfeit" products that appear in all sorts of anime? For example:
In an episode of Negima!, Chisame Hasegawa is seen using a computer software program called Photoshock (an obvious play on Photoshop) to edit photos of herself. In another episode of Negima!, Kazumi is using the internet search engine Bagle (Google) to look up information on another student. In an episode of Eureka Seven, Gidget and Eureka are seen eating "SMICKERS" candy bars. This one's a gimme as to what it's supposed to be. In one episode of Inuyasha that I know of, Kagome and her friends eat at a fast-food restaurant named "WcDonald's". I've heard that several other anime series also have these in them. Even Dragon Ball Z is guilty of this same thing. In one episode, in an attempt to blow up Majin Buu, Hercule gives him a "Game Poy" to play with. Obviously the reasons why they use these is because of copyright issues with the real brand names but they're still pretty funny. |

They used GENTLE! instead of Google in Death Note.

I recall seeing "Pony" instead of Sony a few times on several anime series.
And Code Geass has blatant product placement for Pizza Hut. |

Lots of anime have characters playing console games, so SOMY, SUNY (not the university), and many other forms have appeared instead of SONY. In Genshiken they had Comic Toranoana and Puyo Puyo Fever as real placements (they were investors/advertisers), but all other electronics, as well as titles of other anime/manga/games, were replaced with similar names.
That was THE most blatant example. |

I've wondered before about "Black" soda or caffeinated drink. I've seen it in Noein and I think in FLCL.
Is this an actual drink or is it just a play on the name of a popular drink in Japan? Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society had product placement for a Nissan Sport Concept car and for the Infinity Kuraza. The SSS website stated that they announced and revealed the actual car at the same time as the release date of GITS:SSS. Oops, just checked my facts... The Nissan Sport Concept and the Infinity Kuraza premiered at the 2005 New York International Auto Show and North American International Auto Show in Detroit. There's a pretty cool video of them at edmunds.com. Check the following to get to the link: animenewsnetwork.com/news/2006-09-21/video-nissan-cars-to-be-featured-in-ghost-in-the-shell-film |

All I can think of right now is Hescafe from Ouran High School Host Club. Plus Kyouya's laptop has a logo of a pineapple on it, which is probably a spoof of Apple.

"Pineapple" laptops were also used in Digimon Hayate the Combat Butler makes me laugh with how they bleep out any spoken references to S*ny. |

As of late, the Nintendo DS has made a fair number of appearances.

Anyways, does this seem to be a problem with anyone? Other than Geass and Pizza Hut -- which is blatantly obvious -- I tend not to notice the rest of 'em. Therefore, it doesn't bother me one bit.

Nah, I think the point is more that they're funny more than anything else. I feel like I've seen the Wcdonald's thing in tons of anime series; Please Save My Earth is what comes to mind right away. In Honey and Clover, Morita wins a "Mocademy Award." |

Well, I don't only see these in anime but I've seen them in American cartoons as well (although, not as often). I remember the "Bapplebee's" from Red Garden off the top of my mind...

I've always been amused by the weird fake-brands that appear in anime. The first thing I think of his "KenWool" instead of "KenWood." But yes, SOMY and WcDonalds seem to be the most prevalant.

there's actually a thread about this over on Anime On DVD right now. i've seen so many of these, i don't even know where to begin. the big one that comes to mind right off the bat is Wcdonalds from Inuyasha. also in Cowboy Bebop, Jet drinks "Pippu". other ones i remember right off the bat are "Heireken"(Black Lagoon), "Starchild"(GITS: SAC), and "Mcdoness"(Darker Than Black)

That's nowhere as glorious as the Bakademy Award. |

I believe this is because of Japanese broadcast rules...they can't display company names / products without permission from the company involved, so rather than going through the red tape, they use a recognizable fake.
