Many things in Japan are expensive, so what difference would it make?

Just the dedicated magazine. The manga itself still continues publication on Weekly Shōnen Magazine.

I'm under the impression from the current chapters that Fairy Tail is going to take Naruto's place amongst the Big 3.

The magazine was created with the sole purpose to feature the two spin-off manga, now that they have ended the magazine has served its purpose.

Let's face it, sales were probably below expectations. They wouldn't end this soon otherwise.

On the plus side, Mashima can concentrate on the main story. This guy is a beast with his manga output.

Not even close. Fairy Tail itself runs in Weekly Shounen Magazine.

Monthly Fairy Tail magazine is the "magazine" they started up to publish the DVDs of for the first year of resumed Fairy Tail anime, as well as 2 spin off series. Basically, it was a really fancy DVD release they'd planned when they were only guaranteed an additional year of the anime.

With the two spin off series that ran in it over, and the first year of episodes for the resumed anime released, the "magazine" is ending as planned. They'll be doing something else for the dvds for the next year of episodes ahead of them, likely something more normal.

They were meant to end on 13th issue from the beginning.

It was originally planned to be 13 issues from the beginning. Don't you think it's too coincidental that both Fairy Tail Zero & Ice Trail both ended at chapter 13? Not to mention DVD's reached the end of the season by the last issue. Hiro Mashima isn't going to be able to work on 2 series simultaneously forever.

As for the sales, the sales were actually really good. The sales were so good that they made 2 additional spin-off series, Blue Mistral & Fairy Girls.

I hope he does more Rave Master crossovers. However, I can settle for the fact that FT often will use weapons or clothing wore by Rave Master characters and that RM characters (outside of Plue) sometimes do appear in the background.

Like the others said here, this monthly publication was designed to only run 13 issues.

But what's more interesting is that in terms of tankoubon releases, the English release is effectively now only one volume behind the original Japanese release. Now that Kodansha is essentially doing a near-simulpub of the original Japanese release in the USA through Crunchyroll's manga section, it may pretty soon be possible that the English-translated release of the latest tankoubon volume could happen within just a few weeks of the original Japanese release.
