The movie absolutely deserves it. It's a very beautiful, heartfelt story, very relatable and GORGEOUS to look at. It and Big Fish & Begonia (not Anime, technically, since it's from China) are among my top choices for best animated films this year.

I'm surprised Mirai actually won since it usually seems like award ceremonies only put anime movies in to fill a quota and they rarely actually end up winning. This might be the only US award Mirai wins besides maybe the Crunchyroll awards so we should savor this moment.
