---------------------------------- Episode 10: Gastric Measures ---------------------------------- Summary: The Restaurant Owners Union plan to throw an eating contest to attract people back and raise money for the the village, which has finally been rebuilt. However, they underestimate Shui and the Bearcats, who seem to have endless stomachs. After winning the contest, Shui's prize is unlimited 24-hour access to Boxxo. Lammis carries Boxxo to the Origin stratum, where an orphanage resides. ---------------------------------- Comments: If this took place in the cold, this would've been the perfect Christmas episode. I've always associated Christmas with "the spirit of giving," and am happy when the less fortunate get some very fortunate and free gifts. And the fact that they're orphans makes this giving even sweeter. I remember back in high school, we had this program around winter holiday season where teachers could volunteer their class as a "secret angel," and we'd try to raise money for a less fortunate child and get them some nice Christmas gifts. It was my Sophomore year (I was 15), and I was working part-time at Toys 'R Us. The teacher said we raised about $60 and had one week left. I liked having money from a part-time job, but wasn't particularly saving up for anything, at the time, so I gave the teacher another $40 out of my pocket, because I thought $100 would be a nice round number for the kid to get some nice stuff. Everybody was surprised, because it took almost two months just to get to $60. But it was getting close to Christmas, so I thought to myself, "alright, Merry Christmas, kid." Featured items of this episode are soda and balloons. Soda is quite the tricky item when you're having it with food, because of all the sugar and syrup and the extra calories they add. I used to drink a lot of it as a kid, then drank only the clear ones as a teen (had this idea in my head that the clearer ones weren't as bad for you). As an adult, I only drink soda a few times a year and mainly drink water (try to do about half my body weight in fluid ounces a day). But yeah, sometimes when you want that slightly sweet and cold drink, soda can hit the spot. I usually drink it when I'm eating junk food, as I feel the soda is a good counter-balance to the (usually) high amount of sodium in said food. Balloons are also a great simple item. I used to love balloons as a kid, but kinda' got annoyed that they floated away so easily. At one point, I got so tired of them floating away, I started to tie them to my wrist or a piece of clothing, then started collecting them in my room to make a balloon bouquet like you see in the movies, but I couldn't acquire them fast enough before the helium started leaking out of the others. This was a great episode. I was really happy for those kids. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: Last edited by Tony K. on Fri Sep 15, 2023 7:46 pm; edited 3 times in total |

Episode 11
This week the gang went to a horror themed dungeon floor. The episode mostly dealt with Lammis not at all being prepared for a spooky situation. There was also a rather sad section about a zombie boy who got killed despite only wanting to get juice (he even got a coin for Boxxo). |

And that was the last episode of the first season, yeah, a second season is a fact now and it is one hell of a surprise. It is also interesting because the first season contains nearly all content from the first three novel volumes, all that is left are web novel chapters beyond that.
As for the final episode, I imagined it to be the team beating the floor boss, but defeating him got an even bigger fish involved. Said fish is a general of the demon king and the best they could do was to make him take an interest and thus bow out.....for now. After that it was back to town and time to relax a bit and think back on all the crazy adventures thus far. Like the episode said near the end, the premise of reincarnating as a vending machine is crazy, but it resulted in a fun anime that was a lot better than one would expect. |

Final:
5.5/10. There's no way I'm gonna give a high grade for this. But hey, I signed up for this with minimal expectations, and the show still met them. I eventually got what I want. |

It is almost time for the second season to start. I am looking forward to it since the show can get creative/weird, especially when it comes to the abilities of Boxxo.
Btw, It is really interesting to see what the anime has done for the novel. The novel was unfinished/cancelled with 3 volumes of which the last one released in 2017. Since the anime aired all three volumes had a revised version release with new illustrations and a new fourth volume has come out too. |

That's a very cool happen-stance. Yay for anime adaptations increasing franchise popularity! |

The first episode of the brand new second season was better than I expected. The first season was very entertaining but I struggle to call it more than good(ish). With the new episode we had improved animation and an exciting follow up to the previous encounter with the skelly lord. Said encounter had a lot of characters working together and felt like a season finale, it might have made for a better conclusion to the previous season, oh well.
A good start and Boxxo has become rather powerful with lots of abilities (that huge vending machine form is a real thing). |

I appreciate that the show has picked up from where it left off with an uncharacteristically shrewd "boss" and portrays "old folks" as anything but frail, thereby implying they were very much better in their prime.

Yah, I won't say the series got more serious - not when the big bad got wrecked by a couple tons of ice vending machine being lifted through the air by a few dozen children's party balloons - but it was definitely more action oriented. I saw sides of big bear guild master and the Menagerie of Fools party leader that I don't recall seeing much of before, and the senior citizen kick butt brigade was pretty cool.
I appreciated that they didn't spend a ton of time recapping. The first season didn't make that big of an impression on me, and I haven't rewatched it since, but I didn't have any issue remembering the characters and their various deals as the episode went along - I even remembered that old dude's mild fixation with playing Boxxo like a slot machine when those 7's started rolling up. I think old dude's granddaughter used to go along with him in the mornings or something?. Even if this had been the first time I was seeing the show, I still could have got the hang of things pretty quick. It was fun. |

S2, 1:
I have absolutely no idea why I'm watching this. I watched the first season and thought it was okay. Not emotionally invested in it or anything. So why am I here? Beats me. This summer is pretty packed with a lot of shows I want to watch, and this one's not up there. If I have too much on my plate, I'll drop this. |

The second episode was pretty satisfying. Not only did Boxxo manage to talk (in a limited manner) but everyone also came together to save the town. It was an effective showcase of how versatile Boxxo is when he has enough money in his system to keep things going. When the money runs out it becomes a different story but the rich girl seems to have a plan.

Well, while I wouldn't say I am emotionally invested, I'll say why I am watching and see if any of this goes for you...Imaginative concept and writing, well thought out story and worldbuilding, good character artwork, well done characterizations, varied and original cast of characters that work well together, narrative that took necessary time to introduce mains and allow viewers enough info to get to know their motivations and (dare I say it) care what happens to them. Really like seeing the start of the new season paying all of that investment off with a more involved plot to showcase the stakes and how Hakko/Boxxo might help win a difficult fight given the other characters have believable limitations...Not sure the whip lady's "battle outfit's" utility, but she looks fine... |

Isn't that the girl who was obsessed with owning Boxxo in season 1? Why do I have a feeling that her plan is going to involve him living in her rec room or something?
Anyway, I liked the development where his ability to communicate is expanded. I did a google search to see if there are any vending machines that have mechanical arms and legs, and what I found was that there are or were vending machines in China that dispensed cheap prosthetic limbs. After the big battle that just took place, that could come in handy! And ummm...would anyone believe that pun was unintentional? |
