Personally i love Yu Yu Hakusho. The action is great and all the special moves are sweet. Not to mention it has a storyline, unlike dragonball z.
So, what i want to know is: who is your favorite character and your favorite move[s]. Mine are Hiei and his spoiler[ Dragon of the Darkness Flame, also known as the Black Dragon Wave. That move is devestating! I wish i had a Jagon eye!] Although that is probably the most obvious answer, i don't care! Its still cool. |

Speaking of Hiei...I just purchased "Sword and Dragon" and the animation gets really wonky in Epi. 58...
Anyone know why the animation suddenly changes. Oh, and my fave character is by far Kurama. That made spoiler[Epis. 56 *really* hard to watch]...I still don't know how Cartoon Network is going to show it... |

I liked Yuu Yuu Hakusho when it was on Adult Swim. Then it went to Toonami and some of the edits just about made it unwatchable. Not to mention the story arc that started on Toonami (I think it's that Dark Tournament thing) was way too DBZ for my liking...only real redeeming part was that the ring announcer was a cute neko girl.
I'd probably watch more if I could find it uncut somewhere...and somehow hurry quickly past this Tournament arc, as I hear the show gets better afterwards. As far as favourite characters go, I'm rather partial to Hiei, Kurama, & Botan. The old woman with the cigarettes is pretty cool, too. |

I think of it as Dragonball Z with good characters and a sense of humor. Though it dragged into a rather DBZ like scenario, I thought it was still rather good and the fights are decidely less monotonous and better paced than those in DBZ. So, I like it, though I have no particular tie to it. I'm not much for action shows when you get down to it.

Kurama is one of my favorite character in Yu Yu Hakusho because spoiler[of his ability to transform in to a demon fox]. The other one would be Yusuke. spoiler[Because you find out later that he's a half demon that's crazy

Spoilers the entire endingspoiler[ I think the entire half demon thing was pulled out as negation ploy with Shonen jump. The second tourny is a bit dumb and pointless. The creator wanted to end it much sooner and focus on different elements, especially some of the romance. The ending of Yu-Yu is somewhat abrupt, and deals mostly with Yusuke and Keiko. The mangaka considered this, I feel to be of greater importance. ]

What little I saw of YYH was great, but then it started to become a DBZ ripoff when the tournament started. BTW, aren't the dvds uncut?

I liked Yu Yu Hakusho. It was good, but nothing I would like watch more than once. The DVD covers do say the episodes are uncut, so I guess they are.

I love YYH. Yes, I do happen to be a Kurama fangirl, but I like other things about it, and I like Kurama for more than just his looks^^

Oh, DBZ did have a storyline; just a very shallow one. I realize YYH was done on a TV budget, but I still don't like the animation. (i.e., choppy, simple character designs) Maybe I've just been watching too many things by CLAMP.  I feel the manga did a better job telling the story and developing the characters. Just remember everyone, the Toonami edit will keep you from knowing anything at all (The "female" of the Triad, fight with Chu,...  )

DBZ has a story. In fact, based on what I've seen of Yu Yu Hakusho (up through the end of the tournament arc), I daresay DBZ has a deeper and more complex story. I know it's "cool" to randomly diss DBZ while talking about other shows, but would those of you who are apparently basing your opinions of the show on a few minutes that you've seen here and there on Cartoon Network please refrain from talking about it? There's much more to it than most people give it credit for. But I didn't come here to threadjack and turn this into a discussion about DBZ. To address the actual topic at hand: Yu Yu Hakusho is all right. As I said earlier, I watched up through the end of the tournament arc. I wouldn't mind seeing the rest, but I typically avoid watching fansubs of licensed shows, so I guess I'll have to wait until FUNimation releases it. Favorite character is probably Kurama, because for some reason he reminds me of a real person I know. |

I've seen the whole series and I obsessed over it for about two years at the beginning of my anime fanfare. I think I know what I'm talking about when I say that I found the story to be fairly simplistic and shallow. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but here the same basic plot formula is recycled for every majour story arc with little deviation aside form a couple gimmicks ("okay, it's the same as last time, only this time there's time travel!"), the animation is crude, the music (yes, the original Japanese music) is usually dull, only a sparse few cast members have any real development (sadly enough, Son Gokuu is the most shallow of all), the show drags on at a sickeningly slow pace, and the filler is absolutely atrocious. Does it have some redeeming qualities? Yes. Some of the characters (some, by no means the majority) have a bit of depth, a couple of the story arcs are tolerable, and the manga, TV specials, a couple of the movies, & that song they play when Son Gohan turns SSJ2 are actually good. I just can't bring myself to enjoy the show on a large scale, nor do I see any real depth of story. I don't bash on it "because it's cool," I bash on it because after obsessing over it for a good couple of years, I expanded to other anime, came back to it, and just couldn't recover whatever it was I had seen in it to begin with. However, just because I reached a different conclusion about the series than you is no reason to accuse me of "only having seen a few minutes" of it. I think I'm perfectly capable of weighing in on a show with my honest opinion without being told I have no clue what I'm talking about just because my opinion differs from yours. |

It still doesn't call for "quick, lets use this as an insult to Dragonball Z".
But whatever feeds your gullet. All I'm annoyed with is everyones annoying constant repetition of "watch Evangelion/noir/chobits, its better!". No, It's different, there's a difference. Nagisa, you're able to actually distinguish what you don't like and do like about the show, Unlike SOME people who just bash it because, well, it doesn't have a lolicon fetish like said "Hentai game to Anime or Chobits" or Big "deep" meaningful psychological Garbage like Evangelion. I mean hell, it's a kids show, and you could do a LOT worse. |

That's all well and good, but I wasn't talking to you. All you said was that the tournament arc of YYH was "too DBZ" for your liking, and it is kind of similar to the Tenkaichi Budokai and Cell Game, so I'm not going to disagree with the comparison, nor will I hold it against you if you don't happen to like that kind of show. I know that if everyone watched all of Dragon Ball/Z/GT, even if they watched a version that DOESN'T emphasize the action and downplay the characters like the FUNimation dub, there would be a large number of people who, even after having experienced it in its entirety and at its best, just wouldn't like it. Different people have different tastes, and that's totally cool. The person I was responding to, the person I quoted in my post (ie, not you), said flat out that DBZ doesn't have a story, which is kind of ridiculous. Dragon Ball bashing runs rampant on these boards, but very few people who badmouth the show say anything that leads me to believe they've given it a fair chance. I'm just really getting tired of opening a thread like this, where it's supposed to be about whatever show, and someone just has to slip in a crack at DBZ, as if that somehow validates his opinion. If we're talking about Yu Yu Hakusho, let's talk about Yu Yu Hakusho. Dragon Ball Z, in the context in which it was brought up by trlman99, is totally irrelevant. It was only mentioned so that he could let all of us know that he hates the show. And THAT irks me. I'm not a huge DBZ fan like I used to be, but I do still enjoy the show, and I don't like that people just sit around and take potshots at it for no apparent reason. How about if every time you opened a thread, regardless of the advertised subject matter, you were confronted with the very good possibility that someone is going to open fire unprovoked against a show you like, just because he knows everyone else will agree with him and give him a pat on the back for it? How about if a huge proportion of those shots were just stupid generalizations or even outright fallacies about the show, which would certainly imply that the writer never sat down to give the show a fair chance before writing it off? I doubt many people would be okay with that. Such is the case with Dragon Ball and me. Anyway, to avoid hijacking this thread any further, I won't respond to any of your specific points, but if an appropriate thread comes along in the future (since I don't particularly feel like creating one myself right now), perhaps we can debate the merits and flaws of the series further. In the meantime, try not to get too defensive about things that aren't directed toward you. |

I'd say Yusuke's Spirit gun, I really liked the show. But I've seen it too many times on CN. But it holds a place in my heart since it was one of first anime's I really got into and liked.
