I rather like the manga of this since it does in fact teach you a lot about Okinawan culture and almost all of it is interesting.

Personally, I liked it. The romance is pretty low key, but I don't think the romance aspect is the real point, unless it's the undercurrent of romance between Nakamura and Higa-San which I'm rooting for, but also low key. The shows got some pretty visuals, likable characters, and perky music. I also liked all the tidbits about Oki-Nawan culture even if they were humorously overdone. Add all that to an overall pleasant vibe and this might be another way for me to get my slice of life fix this season.

Yeah, the show really manages to capture the vibe of the manga and the fact that it does so looking rather pretty is great. The romance is there but it is indeed not the driving force of the show. The main thing is learning about the culture of Okinawa along the mc and enjoying the fun that they have. A nice sit back and relax slice of life that is at the same time educational.
I am all in. |

Episode 1
And the lastest show from Super Limited Premises Productions is... Okitsura. I was already tired of the language thing before the end of the episode, which is not a good sign. As noted, there are other things going on, like a love triangle and learning about Okinawa, but I'm not sure that'll be enough to keep me coming back. I'll try some more to see. We've had Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! and now this... if one more "dude from Tokyo moves to the hinterlands and falls for a regional chick" premise pops up, I'm gonna officially call it a new rom-com subgenre. |

Sadly, it's the romance that I tune in to romcoms for, and as far as I can tell, there isn't a single indicator that Teru has the hots for Hina aside from him asserting it is so (and they're certainly not shy about piling on the Kana->Teru feelings).

To tell the truth, I'm not comfortable with the so-called love triangle. I call it so-called because we have no idea yet how Hina feels about Teru. But assuming she reciprocates Teru's so-called crush, then that is leaving Higa out in the cold and she seems like a nice kid. I don't mind when one of the points of the triangle is a cow (or gnu as the case may be), but it's a drag when it's not.
The image above leaves no doubt about my own feelings if I was Teru. One of them looks like a 6-year-old tomboy and the other is very "rowr." Wake up and smell the sexpot, Teru. |

That's why I'm kinda thinking that Hina not reciprocating would be a good thing, because it leaves room for Nakamura to gradually reorient as it were. This show doesn't seem to be gearing up for angst, or at least I'm hoping not. If it turned into a Hina liking Higa who likes Nakamura who likes Hina kind of a love triangle, that could be messy.

Having read the manga I will say that the series is very much about chill/fun time and not about any drama and even the romance is not the main selling point. It is pretty much a slice of life show with some fun moments.

This seems like it's going to be a root beer float of an anime - specifically the light, sweet, frothy part of a root beer float, and I'm good with that. God, what was the name of that anime ...Lovely Bones...no that wasn't it... Ryza and the Ever Darkness and blah blah Secret Hideaway...anyway, I said a few seasons ago that I don't mind bright, sunny beach anime with innocent characters being easy breezy, and that's especially true in winter. I also enjoyed the little "origin" arc at the end.

Yeah, it really is a charming slice of life show with some amusing gags. In the case of the latter the ojisan being caught in the net and the shock about Jump arriving a day late were hilarious. Culture wise there were also more interesting bits. The thing about a lot of people there being a bit lax with time seems handy to know.
And yes, Ryza was a very chill experience though that one did have monsters and such being a threat to the peace. |

Dropped. I was constantly time checking during the second episode. I only do that when I'm bored and unengaged. Not a bad show, just not my cup of tea these days. I guess I don't want to learn about Okinawa that badly.

I think it is probably not an anime with very broad appeal. The bits of romance, funny moments and just seeing people have a fun time while learning something really works for me though. Speaking of, in regards to romance we may get a confession next time. I expect someone to interrupt but even then it is already more progress than I was expecting. On the funny moments front it was nice to see that Teru is indeed learning and not getting shocked that easily anymore. Higa was also hilarious in that she was stoking the flames and enjoying herself.
The animation for the dancing part was a bit iffy but oh well. |

Yah, I'm still liking it but I don't really know what to say about it that I haven't already said. I could summarize the specific plot points - the involuntary dance reflex was kind of corny and kind of funny at the same time, like most of the bits where they greatly exaggerated the influence of certain island customs. I was a bit disappointed to see that the MC's feelings for Hina go a little deeper than I thought, because I'm Team Kiga all the way. But I don't really like the show for the drama. It's a light, refreshing watch.
