To add insult to injury, Philia is packed off to a neighboring country in exchange for gold and resources, forcing her to leave her homeland. Despite bracing herself for mistreatment, Philia finds a warm welcome in her new town, where she puts her saintly abilities to good use, erecting barriers against monsters and curing epidemics. But even as she flourishes in her new life, her homeland is under threat of destruction. Air Date & Platform: April 02, 2025 (Wednesday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: 12 episodes [EDIT: Fancy opener stuff edited. -TK] Last edited by Edjwald on Sun Mar 23, 2025 5:43 am; edited 1 time in total |

Sounds like her homeland is very much going to be a case of sour grapes.

Sounds like a riff on the "My unappreciative party abandoned me" genre.

I found the first episode to be charming and I am invested to see how Philia get a deserving better life. Maybe now she will have a life in which she can do the things she wants to do and learn to have fun. Given the end of the episode there will be more actually nice people in her new country too (though that is not much of an achievement). I also like that the sister seems to be a genuinely nice person.
All that said, the premise does not really make any sense. Sure, Philia does not laugh and maybe she does more than she should. Without her the land would still be barren besides the many monsters that would gobble up the people though. Getting rid of said saint seems like a dumb idea at best and might doom the country since it means losing their most valuable resource. The sister might be great at smiling but that will not save your bacon when the werewolves come to town. |

The thing that surprised me was how well made this anime was. I was figuring it for a mid production outing, but the light/bright coloring was gorgeous. The art style was pretty. The background concerto style music isn't really something I'd track down on Spotify or Itunes or anything, but it was really well done. And there wasn't a lot of action to animate, but the few scenes of horse carriages and such were really well done.
All of it made a fairly simple (and not entirely logical) story come to life for me in a way I wasn't expecting. I do have two complaints. (1) This was yet another anime who made it's entire first episode one big beatdown of a passive character, and that was a bit of an emotional slog. I stuck through it because of the other things I mentioned, but I'll bet a lot of potential watchers dropped out. (2) The story does feel a bit predictable. Really, it's a riff on the "Kicked out of My Party" genre where the character who's been doing all of the work gets the boot from a bunch of arrogant cretins who are going to regret it later. Only it's "Kicked out of my Country" But, the character is easy to root for, and the Cinderella aspect gives the proceedings a slightly different flavor. Overall I enjoyed it a lot and will definitely be back. |

Episode 1
Super illogical premise: Saints are absolutely critical to a country's security and well-being, most only have one, this country has two and one of them is acknowledged as the best, but everybody hates her because she doesn't smile. Yeah, blow me, God of Dumb Premises. Anyway, setting aside that steaming pile of conceptual garbage, I'm liking the show. I have to see more of it to be sure that it's a keeper. If it's just about Smiley being spoiled by Blondie and her new country, I don't think that'll be enough to keep me around. Let's see what kinds of stories they toss out. |

Yeah, that starting conceit is stupid, no bones about it. The show is on probation for me; I can see the potential for interesting interactions and characters, but the show has not demonstrated it yet. If it can put the setup issues behind it, I'm an easy mark for such shows. If not...well, there are other things to watch.

What a bunch of mean mothertruckers. Not only were they cruel, but the fact that they just kept laughing while they did it is even worse. That's probably the last we'll see of those motros, so I hope it's nothing but positive vibes for Philia going forward.

I wonder about that, the younger sister is still in her homeland and the plot summary bit says said country is on the brink of destruction.

Even with an impending apocalypse, I would say any situation over what Philia was getting from her home country is better. Every single one of those people, outside of her sister, are scum. And it'd be weird if Mia turned out to be the most sociopathic of them all in some weird twist. I can only hope Philia grows emotionally and comes out of her shell being around actual decent people. Personally speaking, I would rather risk death for people who actually care about me than have guaranteed survival for people who don't. The second episode to rectify the sourness of the first one can't come soon enough, and I have a feeling it'll be great.

Yeah, does look hard to take people seriously that like her not smiling or something is the worst thing in the world. If I heard correctly she fought werewolves? It is clear that she is not being appreciated by most of the people around her, so her being appreciated elsewhere is cool. Maybe just a me problem, but when the werewolves were brought up, my mind kind of got stuck on thinking of her like Lady Maria from Bloodborne.
There were some parts I wasn't entirely clear on. Like I got a perception they were taking advantage that she was so agreeable and are just assuming that her sister would take her place. I am kind of hoping there is something like taking for granted how Philia was, and her sister would turn the prince down might just follow her. |

@DuskyPredator
She left because her parents had destroyed any sense of self worth she had and instilled an excessive sense of duty and deference to authority. There was no one is the kingdom who could have forced her to leave. Calling these women "saints" tends to obscure the fact that they are extremely powerful magic users. It is mentioned at the beginning. Philia prays (that is she chants a short spell) and destroys an entire mob of werewolves. If she had told the prince to give the money back she isn't leaving who could he send to arrest her? |

I was under the impression that while saints indeed have powerful magic it is of the purification type and thus effective against monsters and the like but not against humans.

I got the impression that they were limited by expectations. Healing magic if the injury was not caused by an evil being would be a stretch to be purification. I suspect that you wouldn't want to make a Saint so miserable that they turned to the dark side.
