Oh, the glory days when there was constantly a new Super Robot Wars on the horizon between console and portable installments...
The ones they'd worked on are some of the most beloved entries, too.
Aside from that FMP game (years old now!), I have no idea what they'd been up to lately. Not enough that worked, it would seem. Funny, I'd daydreamed that it'd be neat if they did some more stripped down "portable-esque" titles again, somehow, then this happens...

Honestly it's impressive that they held out as long as they did.
We don't really talk about it much, but one of the big (bad) things the Nintendo Switch did when it launched in 2017 is that it effectively killed the handheld games industry. Platforms like the NDS, 3DS, PSP, PSV, etc. were able to sustain a lot of developers on mid-budget games because they simply didn't need to spend a lot of money on visuals in order to compete with the bigger, more expensive games they were in direct competition with. But with the Switch pulling double-duty as a home-console, that niche disappeared.

I never thought about that effect before, that jump has been really rough for Pokemon and they are a massive company.

Another factor might be that super robots in general are kind of a thing of the past. How many new ones have been coming out recently to warrant new editions of SRW. Or can we just reuse the same 80s, 90s, and 00s franchises for all of eternity?
