I might have read the room wrong, but I kinda got the vibe that after the Reconquista in G films doubled down and had that whole "Haha! That Gundam you're buying doubles as a toilet!" bit, Tomino's meme'ing that the war made no sense and the Gundams were objects of absurdity was gonna land him some hot water.
Was the Gundam studio sending a dig back his way, that his face is on their money in their safe, or was this "cameo" his idea? Is an amusing theory to entertain.
Am I overthinking things? Why are Lagrange Points do? The world may never know....

GQuuuuuuX is a predominantly khara production, which is full of people who basically idolize Tomino (look up any time Anno has commented on CCA for a fun time). This is just a cute cameo paying homage to a creator they respect, in the same way that the sheer effort put into recreating camera angles, SFX, and an overload of eyecatches from the original for episode 2 was
Or better yet, it should be taken as no more a dig than Minovsky particles being named after Tomino is

I don't know why people's first thought about a reference to the father of Gundam would be a negative dig rather than an homage.
