I'll just assume the reason for different safer sephiroth ends up being a FF7R future design and thus cant talk about it.

Fans of the actual Final Fantasy card game are getting killed with this original art and the fact that games like XVI aren't even in the FFTCG yet.

Eh, at this point a FF TCG set is comprised of 40-50% (usually good) original art, and the concept art that does get reused tends to fit that game's frame better than it does Magic trying to do the same thing with Through the Ages
But as for Nomura's Sephiroth, it seems like they're wanting to go with a clearer delineation between the human part of Sephiroth and the monstrous with him no longer having a wing for an arm, which is interesting
