When I first heard the title I assumed it was a spinoff of the other show focussing on the brother and sister twenty-something campers.

Sorry, I am not getting the reference of what the "other show" is?

I'm not sure what the other show is either?

Anyhow, I watched this anime today, and to be fair, I was trying to do some work at home and not giving it my full attention, and that might have played into things, but I was a little disappointed.

I wasn't expecting the 34 to 20 age difference, but that's a fairly tame taboo by some anime standards. My main issue was that based on the pretty trailer with its pretty music and soothing voice over narration, I was expecting a slow slice of life anime with possibly some very low key, gradual romance elements. Instead I got what felt like a clumsy rom-com - complete with panty flash, clumsy pratfall on first sight, and annoying arguing- that got in the way of the slice of life vibe.

But maybe that's just me.

Nah, it is not just you. The early bit and near the end offered some of that slice of life comf but otherwise there was a lot of drama. It was not the type of drama that made me giggle either, it made me feel sorry for Gen since he came to unwind and it was ruined by the annoying person that is Shizuku. So annoying in fact that she barely reflected on her actions and kept on trying to strong-arm poor Gen into going along with her whims (including trying to make the panty thing into a threat).

I go camping once every few years and I shudder to think of ever meeting someone like Shizuku. So yeah, the second episode will need to do a lot to keep me on board since I want my slice of life to actually be relaxing.

Episode 1

If an extrovert girl shows up at my campsite, please have it be Nadeshiko Kagamihara* and not Shizuku Kusano, as the former is lovable and the latter highly annoying. Gen Kinokura was inadequately compensated for her annoying yapping and sleeping outside the tent in the cold (leaving it to the reader's imagination on what proper compensation would have been).

Predicting that Solo Camping For Two will be an "opposites attract" rom-com with minimal proper scenery (not pantsu "scenery"), relaxing moments, and helpful hints on camping and camp cooking (for that there is of course Yuru CampΔ**).

*Best anime character of all time.
**Best anime show of all time.

I barely made it past the half-way mark, and wanted to bail so badly, but stuck it out. Time I'll never get back. Sad I hate Shizuku with a passion. Maybe not as much as Terror in Resonance's Lisa, or Aoi in Coppelion, but she's right up there on the too stupid to live scale. Before she showed up I was totally vibing with Gen, being a confirmed solo camper myself (hiking/camping with other people always felt like a forced march, so going alone was more fun). I so felt his pain.

Story time (skip the rest if you don't care Smile):
I was backpacking north of Yosemite and about 5 days in, broke my leg and dislocated my ankle. I could still kind of walk on it, since only the fibula snapped, but yeah, pain. I'm sure I could've eventually gotten back on my own if I had to, but I had passed a family earlier who were camping with pack horses, so I made my way back to them to see what their story was (like how long they planned to stay, if they might send a message when they went back to send a horse down for me, or whatever I could arrange without bothering them too much).

Apparently they didn't believe my leg was broken, but they could see how swollen it was. Still, they pretty much left me alone to pitch my tent (well away from their campsite) until they were ready to head out in a couple of days to meet a supply packer.

In the meantime, I did join them a bit while the mom read the kids chapters of The Pathfinder or one of those Natty Bumppo novels. The dad, who as it happened was a stablemaster or horse wrangler or something at Skywalker Ranch, also gave me long lectures about how I should never camp solo. I was like, "so if someone had come with me, they'd have to go solo to get help, and what if something happened to them?" Anyway, I had a good laugh when the chapter they were reading ended with ol' solo camping, woods-wise hero Natty jumping over a log and breaking his leg. The end.

The worst of Shizuku is that she is too self-centered to notice how much she is annoying Gen with her constant yapping and then STFU. Would be hard to blame Gen if he suggested that she camp solo in Hokkaido in an area known to have brown bears.

Episode 1

Thanks to Gina's story above, I learned that she is WAY, WAY more tough than I am. I probably knew that before. Camping on a broken leg? Much respect. "I could still kinda walk on it since ONLY the fibula snapped..." Yikes. That family sound like turds for not being more helpful.

Anyway, I'm clearly in a solo tent on this, but I enjoyed the episode. I totally get why anybody would be appalled by Shizuku and feel sorry for Gen, but I thought she was cute and he just comes off as an anti-social ass, tbh. But I do enjoy their opposites not so attracting dynamic.

@Gina - I think the one thing about solo camping which this anime actually demonstrated is that you shouldn't do it until you've got some kind of experience under your belt although the degree to which that is true might vary depending on the area. These two were going to some kind of official camping ground, for example. I imagine you probably grew up in a family that went camping or went to a summer camp or had special forces training or something.

I love to hike, but when I camp, I usually canoe first, which is a lot easier with a friend (not just paddling - there are rapids and a lot of big fallen trees and we have to portage a lot). But I only do it once or twice a year now that I'm nearing my dotage - after all, as best as I can tell, I'm only nine or ten years younger than Blood Wink Anyway, the point I was trying to work my way to is that it's probably safer with cellphones and not too many dead zones left along the rivers and trails in my parts, which is the only good thing I have to say about wireless phones, probably another age indicator. I'm typing this from a laptop, and I watch my anime on a big screen TV the way God intended.

Yeah, no matter how you prepare solo camping is an activity with risks. A wrong step, a wild animal or meeting someone up to no good, those are all possibilities (though over here in Holland the worst you can come across animal wise is an Adder... although we do have a small number of wolves now too). That said, there is the risk of something unexpected happening and than you have yoloing it. Shizuku having only brought some food is a clear example of the latter.

Lol, no. Midwestern farm girl. The only "camping" I did as a kid was church camp (my sister did 4-H camp, but I never got to, don't remember why).

I guess I'm pretty self-sufficient though. I hiked down into the Grand Canyon to the river with only a day pack and a sleeping bag and some water and minimal food. Slept on a picnic table. Borrowed a sewing kit from some guys who'd ported down a 4-man tent and a two burner Coleman stove, among other luxuries. Realizing they'd have to cart all that back up the trail, they were kind of amazed by my bare-bones camping. I didn't have the heart to tell them I just didn't have any gear. Very Happy

It would only count as glamping if you hired people to paddle your canoe and handle the portage, and then set up your tent and prepared your dinner. If you're doing all that yourself, you're good. Actually the last bit should already be waiting for you when you get to the "glampsite." Smile
