Episode 1
The MC certainly has reasons to feel aggrieved which always makes for a strong motivation. I'm interested so far. |

Yeah, that sure is plenty of motivation for a revenge mission. The real question is if it will be one or become a ''I guess that I will save the world'' type situation. Most shows never dare to go full on slayer when it comes to revenge.

@Smurky - The shows that do go full on Edgelord are pretty unwatchable. I love shows like Btoom or High School of the Dead, but shows that are the anime equivalent of an angry 13 year old screaming out his rage while he tortures an electric guitar aren't really my thing. It comes down to whether the MC retains any sympathy. Are they instruments or vengeance/justice/necessary change, or do they just comes across as an excuse for the author to get off on torture porn while feeling sorry for themselves? I liked Ubel Blatt, for example, because the MC wasn't a complete @$$hole even though there were plenty of them around to be found.
This anime has done some pretty impressive world building, and it's got a lot of imagination, and I am rooting for the MC so far. Plus, I'm still holding out hope that this will turn out to be a soothing, healing anime. After all, the MC loves trash, and now he's sitting on a whole world's worth. That monster is obviously a metaphor for the MC himself...hated, shunned, living off scraps...once those two bond and start chilling and making their own little comfy home... |

The marquee action offering for this season with the most marketing and expectations built into it. For a pilot episode hook, there are worst ways to keep an audience interested than a world that is predicated on prejudice, a miscarriage of justice and the protagonist's urge to revenge himself on the perpetrator and the society which has condemned him and abandoned him to die in a literal pit of trash. The title itself is an interesting portmanteau. がち is a colloquial way of saying "real" or "genuine" while あくた can refer to 芥, which is a less common way to describe trash or worthless objects. Combined the two, and one could call the adaptation "real trash". Given the whole premise of this adaptation is built on the refuse thrown out by human society (human, organic or otherwise), it's not a bad choice for a series title. Rudo has serious scarring on his hands which cause him pain, so his foster father not only raised him after he was found abandoned but also gave him the black gloves he keeps on to disguise the marks and dull the pain. From what we can tell, he has full use of his hands bar the occasional pain bout. He's fast and agile, but only an adolescent so taking on adults in combat is too much for him. Now that his world is literally turned into a living trash heap, he'll have to claw his way out of the Pit. The best revenge stories usually start with this premise where the protagonist is left with almost nothing and has to work back to where he or she started and rise beyond it. For starters, Rudo needs to survive his encounter with the enormous monster composed entirely of garbage. He'll need help, and as this is his story I'll expect he'll survive and then get a crash course into how he has to survive and thrive in his new surroundings. Beyond that, it's up to the writing. The prevailing theme of this franchise is about the value of objects and by extension human beings. Considering how gratuitous consumption has reached heights never seen before in human history, the show goes to great lengths to emphasise how this fictional world takes this theme to the extreme. The privileged live in their nice clean world with orderly trash disposal, the marginalised have almost nothing in terms of living facilities, and the expelled are thrown into the Pit like the refuse of the humans who occupy the privileged core. The hierarchy at the surface is set, but there's clearly levels within the Pit itself with monsters formed out of garbage already a confirmation that the Pit itself isn't egalitarian and has its own hierarchy like the other levels above it. Will this turn out to be "The Count of Monte Cristo" or "Rising of the Shield Hero (season 2 and beyond)"? If it's the former combined with visual spectacles for action scenes casual viewers are in for a treat. If it's the latter where the revenge theme gives way to something less compelling (and very truncated in adaptation), then the brickbats will come in hard and fast. It's off to a good start, but the next 2-3 episodes will determine if it keeps its audience or turns them away permanently. |

I was reminded more of Failure Frame by Ep1 because everybody acts so unreasonably awful to Rudo, even the girl who likes him because she can see he is a sensitive guy and "good person" turns her back in disgust when he is disposed of after presumably murderizing his "father" which she claimed was "impossible"..200% edgelord incoming...BTW, call that city "Neo-Piltover"...

The visuals for the OP fit the theme for this series, but the song is one of those hard rock screamers which are completely unintelligible. The ED song is better and focuses on Rudo instead of the rest of the cast. Turns out the Japanese concept of Tsukumogami applies to this franchise. Treat objects well for a long time and they'll become sentient. In this case, the sentient object repays the human which brought it to "life" by giving aid in times of peril. In Rudo's case it's the pair of gloves he's worn for so long. His pastime of repairing objects with his gloves explains his ability to enchant trash into weapons, unlike Enjin who has his umbrella which is manipulated into a propeller and other tools to permanently disintegrate trash beasts into dust. Turns out there's stratification even in the world below the sphere. If the tribesfolk thought life was tough, imagine being underneath all that rubbish and seeing it destroy the world by turning it into a huge landfill. Small wonder the smugglers think they've lucked out and grabbed a live specimen for big profit. Unfortunately for them Rudo has earned his place with the "Cleaners" and is on the first step on the long and arduous journey towards revenge. Enjin will have to rein in Rudo's murderous instincts, since his hatred can be all consuming. Not a bad start, and the story strings viewers along with its running theme on value. If this is a typical work of its genre Rudi will have plenty of opportunities to develop his skills and the opponents to use them on. |

Ep2- Wherein our "hero" bites the flesh off a person's fingers while being fed rotten foodstuffs and chomps both down in spite, afterwards comes many intense proclamations of coming violence and actual violence...Turns out James will be reviewing weekly, which will be the safe way to keep up and likely be better entertained...so I'm out...Have fun y'all and watch out the edge doesn't cut 'ya...

A one week break so soon after the series starts does the series no favours, but the producers are banking on the adaptation being strong enough to overcome these trifles. They probably have a point, since this episode is the first time the series tries comedy and it's as lowbrow as it comes. It's a ruthless world Rudi finds himself in, and he didn't find it easy up in the outskirts. That said, he didn't know what a plunger does so the lower realm at least had better sanitation systems than the outskirts. Zanka is actually a nice person until one triggers him, unfortunately just about everything Rudi does triggers Zanka so it's going to be a tumultuous teaching stint. As scummy as Enjin is, he DID save Rudo and gave him what he was owed. Turns out the Sphere items sell for a lot in the lower realm, even something as ragged as outskirts clothes. Rudo needs to get used to his new life, since he's effectively bonded to the Cleaners and needs to pay it off with service before he earns the information he needs. Rudo doesn't have immunity to the opposite sex, so Rinka might just be the one to keep a leash around his neck. Like all of the characters drawn to date, she's got the huge eyes which clearly display insanity when they get going. Time will tell how she and Rudi will get along. |

The one week break was due to Japanese elections rather than any issues with the show’s production. One Piece was also affected by the same thing.

Hotel Inhumans wasn't affected by election coverage despite airing on the same day. I never said anything about production issues, only the timing of the break.

I didn't say that you said anything about production issues being the issues, I was just clarifying that the episodes of Gachiakuta and One Piece due to election coverage as it was reported by several other websites.

The adaptation pacing is standard for this genre. Characters are introduced in pairs or trios, and in between plenty of action sequences as viewers get acquainted with their abilities. Not all Cleaners are combatants, and even the ones with powers tied to their items don't always have a combat role (like the secretary). In many ways, the Cleaners act as a paramilitary self-defence militia for hire. Depending on what their mysterious Boss decrees, they may not accept all commissions. The redhead Riyo has a very similar name to Rudi, and with his lack of immunity to the opposite sex he'll be falling for her soon enough if the rage which keeps driving him forward starts to waver. She's easy going but lethal with her chosen tool. The training stint didn't go quite to plan, but Rudo has an idea of the organisation he's going to join and what he has to do to gain the information he needs to fulfil his original aim of return and revenge. I'm not sure if it's going to matter, but Rudo spent almost half the episode without his rebreather on. Unlike his first encounter with trash beasts, he and his companions took them on within a fortified civilian encampment. At least the damage to his breathing organs should be less severe compared to his first experience of the polluted zones. A reminder that it is very possible to return to the Sphere, since the one who framed Rudo in the first place is most likely a Giver not part of the Cleaners. Time will tell if the adaptation makes it that far in its two quarter airtime. |

Plenty of action to be had this episode as well, since Zanka gets his turn in the spotlight. Unfortunately for him it looks like the trap laid by the Raiders to seize Rudo after torturing the kidnappers from Rudo's first hours in the Lower Realm might have done enough to at least kill Zanka since he's badly outnumbered and up against someone more than happy to torture his captives. Rudo is beginning to show more of a personality now that he's had time to get acquainted with his new surroundings. Highly volatile and prone to emotional outbursts due to his background, he's also beginning to realise he has to change if he wants to achieve his original aim of making his way back to where he was banished from. The Cleaners can definitely help him, but he'll need to accept their help if he wants to fulfil his objectives. Especially now that he knows he's got a big target on his back since the Raiders want him for information instead of simple organ donation. Zanka was definitely holding back against Rudo when they fought. He has zero self-confidence in himself, which is why Semiu knows how to manipulate him into getting him to join expeditions he would otherwise be reluctant to volunteer for. Unfortunately for him, their original plan to pair two full-fledged Cleaners for the commission having fallen apart looks to be his undoing as Zanka can't take on all three Raiders on his own. If Rudo comes back to retrieve Zanka, he might have a chance provided he can remember how he controlled his gloves to do his bidding. I expect this story arc to last for at least the next episode. Whether or not it extends beyond that will depend on what's shown for next week. |

Can't go wrong with a show's entertainment value if it serves up solid action scenes on a weekly basis. Others might want more variety to their adaptations, but there are other offerings out there that focus on stories and characters. This one does more than enough for the action buffet on offer. A bit more about how Givers apply their talent in this episode. In most cases, they focus on using their tools to achieve what they really want, whether it's combat or something else. Rudo is a bit different because his tools are his gloves and he has to jump a few extra hoops before he figures out what his temporary weapon can do. Versatility and unpredictability are his greatest strengths, but he needs time to figure out what to do with his borrowed item which can work against him. This week is phase one against the Raider elite Jabba. The claws are bad enough, but having a toxin which drives those in the receiving end berserk is a nasty phase two to take on. It does indeed nullify Rudo's defensive advantage because what comes next is indiscriminate AOE slashes. Rudo missed his chance to kill Jabba while he was still open, so he'll have to think of something different to adapt to the new situation. Zanka is lucky he's not dead, but the toxin will make him hostile for a while until it wears off. If he does wake up and joins the battle, it's going to be a free for all with possible fatalities. A shame Gris is a goner, he was a decent person and his talisman is doing its best to keep Rudo alive where it couldn't for its previous owner. At least he gets the satisfaction of seeing what Rudi can really do before he passes. |
