A poor idea. Visuals make anime! Or it’s just a cd.. now if they could add sound effects like anime, music scores and elements effects, rain, lighting and special move sound effects. Multiple voice actors and some moving background like a WEBTOON and a whole new industry would be born!

When I was a kid, they called that "radio-novels" and now, "fictionalized podcasts", I think.

It’s not a idea...it’s censorship meant to avoid showing the visuals. That’s the real goal behind this decision.
Oh no way, audio-only storytelling with voice acting? That’s never been done before… except it has. It’s called an audio drama.
That’s not new it’s what they call "light anime". |

Hm, color me intrigue. Beside broadcasting it on TV, why don't they put the "audio drama" on Spotify given that's how people listen to audio drama podcast nowadays (since I'm probably one of the few people on ANN that listen to audio drama podcast on there). If you're going to make an audio-only anime that resemble an audio drama, put it on Spotify (or other podcast/audio-streaming platforms).
They're called audio drama or fiction podcast (depend on how you listen to them). Audio drama podcasts has already gained popularity in the last few years. I mean DC and Marvel Comics already has audio drama podcasts featuring everybody's superheroes like Batman, etc... I mean you already got A-list celebrities lending their voices to these audio drama podcasts. |

In the anime industry, audio dramas have been around since at least the mid-'90s, so they're not a recent thing or trend. (At one point I had an OST for a '90s OVA series which included an audio drama episode.) Most non-Japanese fans just haven't been aware of them because they're never translated. |

Sounds like this is one of those "oops, we made it too sexy so now you have to get the blurays to see the whole thing" anime. We seem to get one of those every couple of years. There was Gushing Over Magical Girls last year and Interspecies Reviewers a few years before that. I wonder how successful that release model is? |

I mean, in Japan they can just watch uncensored in AT-X.
In the west, Gushing simulcast was uncensored in HiDive. Meanwhile this show will simulcast the fully uncensored release in OceanVeil. BluRays have stopped being necessary for this kind of show ages ago. |

Ocean Veils stream quality is mediocre and it's hard-subbed too. It's better than nothing but they can also do better.

I was tslking about the censorship issues. In terms of video quality and stuff, BD will always beat TV broadcast in general. But that’s a separate discussion from censorship.
Not like OceanVeil is the only legal streaming site with issues. Remow’s Youtube subs are terrible for translating text. Netflix and Amazon also fail at this. Hidive is better. CR at their best are great at typesetting, but some shows still suffer issues and are subpar in this area: Mono last season and this season’s Secrets of the Silent Witch are quite bad with translating text |

It's 100% a marketing stunt. They already have it airing on other channels with visuals. There's no reason that they need to air it on MX1 like this when its sister channel MX2 already has the typical TV censored broadcast. (Also AT-X sounds like it has it uncensored?) |

Key, I was talking about the recent jump in popularity of audio drama in the US thanks to the COVID lockdown. I knew audio drama existed for a long time, but because of COVID lockdown, audio drama had seen a huge jump of listenership (audio drama had seen a bit of a jump thanks to Spotify adding podcasts in 2015). I know a lot of anime-based audio drama hasn't been translated, but I think most anime fans on ANN would've listened to (or heard of) audio drama that are not based on anime like for example We're Alive, or even Welcome to Night Vale (both of them are high-profile audio dramas). But yeah audio drama in general has already seen a big leap in listenership before and after the pandemic. I believed I shared an article from CBR where the author of the article called for anime-based audio drama to get localized in light of Batman: Unburied's success in the US. |

Which series? Was it a Tenchi Muyo! CD? Most of the imported Tenchi Muyo! CDs I have include at least a few scraps of exclusive character dialogue between some of the tracks but a few of them, particularly the Christmas album and the Pretty Sammy OVA spin-off soundtrack, have a good 15 to 20 minutes of story which really do feel like bonus episodes without the animation (fortunately, the CD booklets include some illustrations that go along with the story for those of us who need some assistance in understanding what's going on due to the dialogue being, of course, entirely in Japanese). I listen to the Tenchi Muyo! Christmas album at least once, often twice or more, each December. I've had the CD since 1998 so it's gotta be the single piece of Tenchi Muyo media that I've revisited the most times. |

Actually, it was the original Vocal Data Disk release for Key the Metal Idol, which consisted of all of the series' songs but also included a 9 minute audio drama on its first part. Sadly, the 2024 Vocal Data Files 30th anniversary release doesn't include that. If you (or anyone else) is interested in checking it out, it can be found online here; the first entry #9, which is labeled [Short Cut], is the audio drama. |
