I like Isekai, and I especially like Isekai that doesn't pound home the three staples that I've mentioned on several occasions, but I have to be honest, I found this one a bit boring.
When I saw the opening, I thought, "Uh oh, Edge Lord alert," and there's no shortage of blood stains on the closing piece either, but the pilot was extremely short on action, and it didn't really make the stakes clear. It sounds like a gamer and his favorite avatar have somehow found themselves in a real life setting of the game they played together, so now they're going to conquer the world for fun? The plight of the dark elves suggest that there will be villains and threats and schemes or needs for social reform manifesting soon, just saying, the animation was pretty standard, I didn't register the music, and the two leads seem pretty basic. Didn't dislike it, but I hope it takes the set-up from episode 1 and runs with it. |

I quite like that the Dark Elves perceived our bland MC as a vague, horrific evil. Theres a possibility for some interesting lore or development around the set up, and 4x mechanics being played around with will make a change from innumerable MMOs and JRPGs.
However, it also carries a grave risk of just being a blander overlord. I'll give it some time as the conceit appeals. |

Episode 1
I found the strategy game conceit a refreshing change from RPGs, too, but yeah the episode didn't set my world on fire. Willing to check out more, though. |

I found it a good enough watch- Atou has just enough character to feel like more than protag arm candy, and them both being transported to....wherever they are...has interesting ramifications. And, her remembering all of his playthroughs means they have something of a rapport already. She remembers the game overs, apparently. I wonder if knowing she was a game character will have any interesting effects on her? Probably not, but it'd be cool.
The biggest issue I have is not really the show's own fault. But this feels like a very crowded season. In this circumstance, is "good enough" worth keeping around? |

For me personally the answer to your question is a no. The first episode was not bad but it did not have a single aspect beyond okay and I came away thinking that it is a decent enough budget version of Overlord. That is probably not giving the show enough credit but it made me yawn and that is never a good sign since I am easily entertained.

Theres nothing really special here, and I don't imagine it will have many takers in such a busy season.
However! I will be one of them. The dynamics of the cast so far are simple but not bad. What appeals about the show is its commitment to taking itself seriously, and to taking its concept seriously. JRPG stat screens, choices and menus are passé now. A tech tree from Civilization? I'm 100% here for it. But its not (quite) just doing the thing. Becoming evil transforms the dark elves psychology in a logical way. Meanwhile, the chosen faction is of evil alignment but it also appears to be a civilization built for peaceful play until mid/late game; the contrast of which puzzles the dark elves. Its not even trying for show of the year, but I'm right in the audience its aiming for and I think I will have fun. |

Episode 2
I'm enjoying it too even without being particularly overwhelmed. Some people refer to it as Overlord Lite which is both true and one of the things I like about it. The protagonists of Overlord are actually evil and do horrible things sometimes which detracts from my enjoyment. So far this is about characters who are ostensibly supposed to be evil but really aren't, which is more my speed. |

I thought the first episode was pretty bland - and honestly, I think the second episode is still kind of bland, but I liked it more for a couple of reasons.
(1) I've done the RPG thing (maybe one of the reasons I like Isekai), and I always found the whole concept of alignments frustrating. Like, I'd have some dweeb DM telling me I couldn't do something or threatening to penalize me because it didn't fit my alignment, and I'd be like, "People aren't one thing! They change! Circumstances change! Contexts differ! An evil enemy spy thinks *they're* the patriot!" So I'm interested in watching that get explored a little. (2) It looks like we're going to settle into some village building, then city building, then nation building, and that kind of thing is in my wheelhouse. I love that element in Tsukimichi Moonlight for example, and other isekai have done it with varying degrees of sucess.. So...yeah. This one and Uglymug Epicfighter both pulled me in this week. (If I was a trucker, my CB handle would Isekai Doormat) |

You are giving me flashbacks to my highly cool high school days when we in the "History and War Games Club" played AD&D in my actual high school. The girls were so impressed with our glamorous hobby that they stayed FAR, FAR away from us... no doubt feeling they just didn't have a shot with such high status dudes. Yep.
Anyway, your comment about how you would deal with the DM made me realize what a nightmare it would have been to play with a jailhouse lawyer... |

Episode 3
I gotta say that I'm getting quite into this. Continue to enjoy the nation building aspect and the forces that are starting to move toward King Ira. Fun little show. |

I'm liking the vibe that's a strange mix of smurf village meets Halloweentown myself, though those flesh trees weren't necessarily something I wanted to think about too much as I ate baked rigatoni while watching the episode.
Watching the two nerdling MCs being enthusiastic and goobery about being evil and the "Saint" being stone cold ruthless about being good is part of that. |

Y'know, up until now, I've been thinking of the two leads and their evil alignment as kind of cute. In fact, I've had to edit this post twice trying to put up an image of David Foley and Scott McDonald doing their EEEEEvil Simon and Hecuba routine from Kids in the Hall to illustrate that fact.
I figured evil was a game setting, but their actions were going to be more just than the good guys, and that might still be the case. But things got a little real this last episode. In specific, Atou's threats to go after the douche paladin's family just to make his last moments more painful seemed like pure malicious sadism. Looks like things are going to be even murkier than I thought. |

Episode 5
I had the same thought, Edjwald, but they did pull back on her "evil." It's funny that you call her final victim "the douche paladin" because most viewers probably also have a negative view of him even though he actually acted completely properly. Unlike his booze swilling, "sure. let's get the hell out of here without properly investigating anything" partner, he abided by the true paladin ideals. It says something about our twisted sense of morals that we perceive him as the "bad guy." Oh and thank you for the Simon/Hecubus reference... it caused me to search on YT for one of their segments and I got a kick out of it. |
